Violin or Fiddle?

I’m gonna let y’all decide this one.

Around 2004, my grandmother was diagnosed with macular degeneration. She knew time was not on her side, and she didn’t want to leave my mom with a lifetime of possessions to sort through. So one day, Mom and I went over to help her start going through things, and I got sent out to clean the shed.

And there, in an old aquarium tank, I found this.

I carried it inside and asked my grandmother about it.

“Oh, honey. That was your great-great-great-grandfather’s.”

Well, immediately I wanted to know everything.

She went to another closet, pulled out this photograph and said, “And here he is with his band.”

And just like that, she gave me the instrument and the photograph.

I’ve had them ever since.

Now, after looking at this band, I want to know what you think they played. And while we’re at it—is this a violin or a fiddle?

Next time you’re at the Big Muddy Inn for one of our shows, go look at the instrument. Then head over to the stairs and find this photograph of the people who once played alongside it.

There are so many stories in this old house. Some belong to Natchez. Some belong to the blues. And some, like this one, belong to my family.

So tell me: violin or fiddle? And what kind of music do you think this band was playing?

Tickets for our 2026–27 season go on sale TODAY at 10 a.m. Central.

We hope you’ll come make a few more stories with us at the Big Muddy Inn.

Tonight is opening night!

And just a stone’s throw from the Big Muddy Inn, Regina Charboneau is back home at King’s Tavern.

King’s Tavern has been around since the late 1700s. Think about all the people who have walked through those doors over the last 200-plus years. Travelers, flatboatmen, locals—and now Regina is back around those tables doing what she does best.

Every Tuesday and Thursday she’ll have a different menu, and you can sign up to sit at one of her tables at Regina’s Kitchen.

She says it’s for her family and her friends. But if you know Regina, you know we’re all family and we’re all friends.

And we at the Big Muddy Inn are pretty dang happy to have her just down the street.

Welcome home, Regina. We’ll see you at the table.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: DEBBIE WILLSON

This week’s Artist Spotlight is especially close to home.

Debbie Willson grew up just across the river from Natchez in Concordia Parish near Black River. She got her first camera when she was only seven years old, and the Louisiana landscape has been telling her stories ever since.

Debbie is known for capturing the bayous, rivers, ancient cypress trees and wild beauty of Louisiana. She has also created a style that is completely her own, including her beautiful images printed on antiqued mirrors.

Her work has been shown in New Orleans and has traveled far beyond the South—including an exhibition at the Multimedia Art Museum in Moscow, Russia.

But what we love most is that Debbie’s story and her art are rooted right here in the Miss-Lou.

The Big Muddy Inn is proud to have several pieces of Debbie Willson’s art hanging throughout the Inn. They are pieces of the landscape we know and love, and each one tells its own little story.

Want a Debbie Willson piece of your own?

Take a look through Debbie’s artist page, see more of her work, and find the piece that speaks to you!!

And when you’re at the Big Muddy Inn, take a minute to look around. You’ll find Debbie’s Louisiana hanging on our walls, too.

We’re proud to have her work here—and even prouder to call her one of our own.
