On the southeastern edge of the Big Island, far from resorts and traffic, lies a place where you can still feel the true spirit of Hawai‘i.
Open Gate Hostel is built on ancient lava rock in Kalapana — surrounded by black-sand beaches, ocean cliffs, and lush jungle. It’s quiet, local, and filled with nature’s energy.

We offer comfortable dorms and private rooms, free waffles and fuits at our tiki bar, strong Starlink Wi-Fi, and a relaxed community vibe. Guests enjoy peaceful nights under the stars, coffee in the morning breeze, and the freedom to explore without crowds.

Nearby, you can visit Pohoiki Hot Springs, Kehena Beach, or hike along the rugged coastline.
