The Ward That Never Emptied

Medicine in the 1700s was not for the faint of heart, and the Spanish Military Hospital Museum on Aviles Street shows you exactly why.

The museum recreates the hospital that served Spanish soldiers here in the 1700s and 1800s, complete with the surgical tools of the day. Visitors and ghost tour groups report footsteps in empty rooms, doors opening and closing on their own, unexplained scents, and a chill that doesn't match the Florida weather outside.

Aviles Street is one of the oldest streets in the country and a great spot to wander after lunch. Make it part of your day trip from Pelican Palm.

Vacation is better when nobody gets left at home.

Pelican Palm welcomes up to two dogs, and the fully fenced backyard gives them room to sniff around while you relax by the pool. Flagler Beach is dog friendly too (leash on), just about 10 minutes away.

Skip the kennel this time and bring the whole family. This is our pup Maizey, and she is excited to get back to vacation!

Catalina Came Home

Some ghosts haunt a place out of grief. Catalina, the legend goes, haunts hers out of love.

Catalina de Porras was a young girl in 1763 when her family fled to Cuba as the British took over Florida. More than 20 years later, when Spain reclaimed the colony, she came back to St. Augustine to reclaim the family home on the bayfront. She died not long after, but staff and diners at Harry's, which now stands on that spot, say she never left. Most sightings describe a woman in a white gown, and the second-floor restroom is her favorite haunt.

Grab a bayfront table for lunch on your next day trip from Pelican Palm, and maybe say hello to the hostess who's been there longest.

Escape the First Cold Snap

I'm still in New England, and while I'll wear my flip-flops all year (except during an active nor'easter), the thought of the impending cold makes me a little sad. As a born and raised New Englander, I know what's coming.

Meanwhile, down at Pelican Palm, it's still shorts and flip-flops weather, with warm days and warmer water well into the fall. If the first cold snap has you dreaming of sand between your toes too, this is your sign to book the trip instead of just thinking about it.

Tucked behind an iron gate near the old city gates, Tolomato Cemetery has been a burial ground since the 1700s and is closed to the general public, which somehow makes the stories about it more unsettling, not less.

Those who've peered through the gate describe sudden temperature drops, a feeling of being watched, and reports of a small boy in a white gown seen playing quietly among the headstones. There's no historical record explaining who he might be, which is exactly the kind of detail that keeps a ghost story alive for three hundred years.

You can view the gate and historical marker from the sidewalk on any walk through the old city.

The oldest planned cemetery in the State of Florida, with burials officially ceasing in 1884.

Missing Pelican Palm already!

Just 8 short weeks ago, 11 of us filled the house in Palm Coast for a mix of work, play, and visiting family. We tackled some maintenance, made a few upgrades, and still found time to enjoy everything the area has to offer.

It was a blast, and it reminded us why we love this place so much. We hope every guest who stays with us feels the same way.

Already counting down to our next visit in December for the Festival of Lights! Until then, the house is ready and waiting for you!

Built in 1891 by Henry Flagler, the Old Jail was designed to look like a stately Victorian house from the street, so as not to alarm the tourists checking into his nearby resorts. Behind that welcoming facade, though, it held some of the harshest conditions in the city's history: 84 inmates crowded into a two-and-a-half-story building, near-starvation rations, and a sheriff, Joe Perry, known for ruling the place with an iron fist. It housed genuinely dangerous men, including convicted murderers, and eight prisoners were executed on a gallows built right on the property.

Visitors touring the museum today report heavy footsteps in empty cell blocks, sudden cold spots, the sound of clanging chains, and, more than once, the shape of a man in a striped prisoner's uniform staring out from a barred window in a section that's supposed to be empty. The solitary cell is said to be the most active spot in the building, with guests describing an unseen presence that rushes toward anyone who sits there alone. Some believe it's the spirit of one of the men hanged on the property, still pacing the space he never left.

It's one of the more intense stops on a St. Augustine ghost tour, and a short drive from a good night's sleep back at Pelican Palm.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Old Jail St. Augustine offers guided tours, paranormal investigations, and a glimpse into the lives of notorious prisoners.

We got a wonderful review from our last guest:

This home truly felt like a home away from home. Everyone in our group agreed it was exceptional—we all loved it. We were especially impressed by the thoughtful floor plan, the comfortable beds, and the overall cleanliness of the kitchen, LR, bedrooms and baths. Most importantly, the layout allowed us to gather in the same space without feeling crowded, even with a one-year-old and a three-year-old happily playing with dinosaurs.

The nights were wonderfully quiet, and the clear views of the stars made the experience even more peaceful. The home itself is stylish yet unpretentious, with décor that feels fun and inviting. The pool and hot tub area was a real highlight—perfect for relaxing outdoors without dealing with bugs. The nearby fire pit, complete with plenty of seating, provided the ideal spot to unwind at the end of the day.
We would highly recommend this property.

We absolutely love hearing what our guests enjoy about our property, and that we can make them feel so comfortable. To see our other reviews, please follow this link:

Just outside the old city gates sits Huguenot Cemetery, established in 1821 during a yellow fever outbreak when the existing cemetery had run out of room.

Visitors have long reported a woman in white wandering among the headstones, along with a general sense of being watched near the cemetery gate. Given how many people were buried there in a short, difficult stretch of the city's history, it's easy to see why the location has such a heavy reputation among ghost tour guides.

You can view the cemetery from the gate on a walk through the historic district, easily paired with lunch on St. George Street after a morning at Pelican Palm.
