Labor doesn’t only happen behind a desk, on a jobsite, or on a timecard.
Disabled people are constantly doing work the rest of society rarely counts as labor: explaining access needs, requesting accommodations, navigating inaccessible systems, advocating for equality, and educating people who should have considered them in the first place.
And alongside them are caregivers doing their own invisible labor. Coordinating appointments, therapies, equipment, transportation, paperwork, daily care, and advocacy.
That work matters too.
So this Labor Day, I’m thinking first about the disabled people doing the exhausting work of pushing the world to become more accessible—and the caregivers standing beside them.
