Spreading a little neighborhood joy on this morning’s walk! 🍃✨

So wonderful to place these adorable “Leave Them Be” zines (created by local artist Sharotonin Native Plant Stuff) into our local Little Free Libraries for folks to discover.

Hope they bring a smile to whoever opens the box today! 💛📖

Today is National Reuse Day! ☕️

Starting the day with a favorite reusable mug and a simple cloth napkin. Swapping out paper napkins and single-use coffee cups is a simple way to lighten your footprint every single day.

What’s one reusable item you can’t live without? Let’s share ideas below! 👇

Celebrating 2 years of the Rhone Street Recycle Station! 🎉

To mark this milestone, I’ve given the station a little update and posted a refreshed version of the 5-step process to make recycling these hard-to-recycle items as easy as possible.

Whether you’re a regular contributor or new to the station, here is a quick recap of how things work:
• Step 1 - Sign Up & Follow: Make sure you’re signed up for the monthly e-newsletter and if you can give us a follow at .
• Step 2 - Clean & Dry: All items must be dry, and 100% free of food residue and debris.
• Step 3 - Sort Into Correct Bins: Note that bins have shifted locations, and we now accept shredded paper (bagged in paper bags) for local processing!
• Step 4 - Payment: Specialty recycling requires a small fee ($3 per grocery bag) to cover depot costs. For several items you can instead opt to visit a free public RecycleOn center.
• Step 5 - No Curbside Items: Reminder on Portland’s shape and size rules for curbside recycling (no tubs, jugs, bottles or buckets that are 2x2 inches or larger).

Need or want extra guidance on your sorting skills?
You can book a free 1-on-1 recycling sorting consultation session with me right here at the station!

Thank you for two amazing years of reducing waste together. Let’s keep it going! 💚♻️

POV: When you know “clean and dry” isn’t a suggestion—it’s the golden rule of recycling. 🧼✨

Wet or food-soiled items are contaminants, so we built a mini clothesline right over our kitchen sink and set up an extra dish rack just to give our recyclables a dedicated place to drip-dry.

Taking a moment to rinse and air-dry items—including plastic film, multi-layer plastics, and rigid containers—helps ensure they actually get processed and recycled.

How do you tackle cleaning your recyclables?

The scariest thing this Halloween?
Fast-fashion waste! 🎃👻

Before you hit “buy now” on a brand-new costume, check out these spooky stats ⤵️

🗑️ 35 million costumes are tossed in the trash each year in the U.S. alone.
🧵 11.9 million pounds of annual textile waste comes straight from Halloween gear.
🧪 83% of costumes are made from non-recyclable synthetic plastic like polyester—adding 2,000 tons of plastic waste to landfills (that’s equivalent to throwing away 83 million plastic water bottles)!

Skip the single-use plastic clothes this year!
Proper reuse and secondhand shopping keep valuable materials out of the trash while saving you money.

Looking for inspiration?
Portland has tons of local shops, swaps, and DIY ideas to help you find or build a unique look without buying new.
