You can do a 1-day trip to Catalina Island from San Diego, by Catalina Express ferry from Dana Point across to Avalon

Suggested 1-Day Itinerary in Avalon
Morning (9:30 AM – 10:30 AM): Arrive at Avalon port and walk the waterfront.
Late Morning: Rent a golf cart to tour the hills and scenic overlooks on your own.
Lunch: Eat fresh seafood at a local spot right by the harbor.
Afternoon: Relax at Descanso Beach Club or do a quick submarine or glass-bottom boat tour.
Late Afternoon/Evening: Catch the return evening ferry back to the mainland and drive down to San Diego.

If you’re in San Diego for the Fourth of July, you’re in one of the best places in California to watch fireworks.

🎆 1. Big Bay Boom (Best Overall)

The Big Bay Boom is Southern California’s largest Independence Day fireworks show.

📍 Best viewing locations:

* Harbor Island
* Shelter Island
* North Embarcadero
* Seaport Village / Marina District
* Coronado Ferry Landing

🕘 Fireworks begin around 9:15 PM and last about 18 minutes. Four barges launch fireworks simultaneously across San Diego Bay. Expect very large crowds, so arrive by 5:30–6:30 PM if you want a good spot.

🌊 2. SeaWorld San Diego

Enjoy a full day at the park, then stay for the spectacular fireworks show.

🕤 Fireworks: 9:30 PM

🎡 3. San Diego County Fair (Del Mar)

If you’re visiting the fair, you can end the evening with a fireworks spectacular.

The Botanical Building in San Diego's Balboa Park, located on El Prado walkway is a historic, iconic lath house built for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, housing over 2,100 plants like ferns, orchids, and cycads, with a famous Lily Pond in front. Recently renovated, it's a major landmark known for its unique architecture and seasonal floral displays, offering free admission and a beautiful, tranquil experience within the larger park. Open daily 10am to 4pm.
