La Jolla Mom 🌴 San Diego destination expert with discount tickets and luxury hotel perks worldwide 🌴

Written almost exclusively by me, Katie Dillon, the goal of La Jolla Mom is to inspire people to enjoy the world abroad and at home with their kids. Here, I document my love of five-star hotels, premium class cabins, and kid-friendly destinations. I do take the occasional press trip, but most content is derived from our own vacations. Those planning an epic vacation to San Diego can find tips f

or the best sightseeing tours, hotels, and attractions while locals also read to find things to do around town. And, finally, I love learning about products that make my life and perhaps yours easier. From camera gear to skincare, if your business has a truly helpful product or service, it’s my pleasure to share it.

Checked into Hotel Figueroa in DTLA and it’s the rare downtown LA hotel that actually feels like a retreat.

The property opened in 1926 as a YWCA residence for solo female travelers, and that history shows up everywhere, from the Spanish Colonial architecture to the art collection spotlighting female artists.

Highlights from my stay:

The Queen Suite was spacious with great natural light. The bathroom runs small (typical for a historic building), but the fig leaf wallpaper and penny tile make up for it.

VIP perks included champagne and charcuterie on arrival, early check-in, and complimentary breakfast for two.

The pool courtyard is private and quaint, with fire pits and lounge seating, and with several restaurants and bars on-site, you never have to leave.

Best part for event travelers: Crypto.com Arena and LA Live are a short walk away. Boutique charm beats a big-box convention hotel every time.

Bonus: Stays of two nights or more are eligible for Hyatt Privé benefits when booked through a participating advisor.

Save this one for your next LA trip.

There’s never been an easy way to get from San Diego to LAX. No train, barely any flights, and the ones that exist are pricey. Car services and rideshares aren’t much better. For travelers whose trip starts at LAX, getting there is a headache before the vacation even begins.

reLAXsan finally closes that gap. It’s a new reserved-seat coach shuttle running San Diego to LAX four times a day, seven days a week, with curb-to-curb drop-off terminal by terminal.

The details:
🚐 $68 per adult, $57 each when two or more book together, $48 for kids

📍 Pickup at Old Town, Sorrento Valley/Del Mar, or Oceanside/Carlsbad

🔌 USB-C at every seat, free Wi-Fi, water, and snacks

🪑 Car seat valet: bring yours, they’ll store it for your return trip (not listed on their website, so ask)

⏰ Arrive 10 minutes before departure

Booking is required and routes do sell out, so reserve ahead. Use code LAJOLLAMOM for 5% off on their website. Heads up that it’s case sensitive, all caps!

I’ve rounded up the June events actually worth putting on your calendar, from major summer traditions and free community events and all the things in between.

Save this now. Future you will thank you when someone inevitably says, “I’m bored.” ☀️🌊

If you’re doing Balboa Park with kids, Panama 66 is an easy win for lunch.

It’s tucked into the sculpture garden at the San Diego Museum of Art, so you still get the Balboa Park vibe without committing to a long sit-down meal when everyone’s already melting down.

There’s outdoor seating, space for kids to wander a little, and simple food that works for picky eaters and adults alike. Plus, you’re close to the museums, gardens, fountains, and the Zoo.

My favorite move: do Balboa Park in the morning, grab lunch here, then decide whether the crew has enough energy left for one more stop—or if it’s time for the pool.

Easy, casual, and way less stressful than it could be.
