Welcome back to our monthly socials! Fall is approaching and this month, we are doing our "Intro to Foraging 101", where board members, members and attendees can all give advice, share experiences, bring their gear, tools and book recommendations. During the fall mushroom season, we go out on forays to collect specimens for fungus fairs and if you've never been out with us (or foraging in general), this is a great intro on what to expect while in the field. Bring in any mushroom you find for identification. Food and beverages will be available and you're also welcome to bring something (just please, nothing made with wild foraged mushrooms. Long story). Happy September and the return of mycological events and our socials. Will will be returning to the Finnish Hall for our monthly socials every last Monday of the month from now-May. Stay tuned for updates via posts and emails.

Un-mycological themed; let's talk about Oak Galls! They are the deformities you'll find on Oak trees, which are created by different species of wasp, each one having a different gall shape. When the wasp lays eggs on the branch or leaf, the tree has a chemical response, causing abnormal growth patterns (the shapes you see here). Inside, the eggs hatch into larvae, eventually chewing their way out as an adult wasp. The large one in the last slide is high in tannins and popular in natural dye, used as a mordant and to make dark dyes and inks by adding iron. Pretty cool!

PSA: Amanita phalloides; Death Caps are making an appearance again. Your annual reminder to please never ingest wild mushrooms you are unsure of. You can touch these, the Amatoxins will not absorb through your skin, it's digestion that causes liver and kidney failure, resulting in fatalities if not seen to immediately. Do your research, get some good mushroom books specific to your area, join a BAAM foray or fungus fair, post to or consult an expert mycologist if you are unsure. Key features to look for; a sickly greenish yellow cap, large skirt (remnant of the partial veil), bulbous egg like sac called a volva and gills. We host educational forays and events and we will resume in September! A good place to learn about Mycology. See you soon 🍄

For our social this month, we are taking things OUTDOORS! Join us at Joaquin Miller Park, near the ranger station on Monday, May 18th from 6-8pm for a fun picnic in the woods. There will be some fun activities, like a scavenger hunt with prizes and snacks. Feel free to bring something to share (just not prepared with wild foraged mushrooms, please. Long story) and/or a mushroom themed item donation for the winners. Not mandatory, but appreciated. See you there!
