🚨 NCHC FACT OR FICTION: SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT FOR 2026–27 🚨

The NCHC isn’t here to gatekeep 🚪—we’re here to protect fair competition and provide absolute transparency so you can enter the season with total confidence!
As our staff works through hardship requests and offseason inquiries, here are the most common myths we’re clearing up straight from the official NCHC Eligibility Guidelines:
🗣️ Myth #1: Homeschool Co-Ops are Under Attack
FICTION: NCHC rules restrict or cap core course counts for students attending traditional local homeschool co-ops!
➡️FACT: Objectively FALSE. Traditional, parent-directed homeschool co-ops are governed under Section 4.2 and remain 100% ELIGIBLE with zero course caps.
THE RULE: Section 4.4 applies strictly to non-parental institutional facilities and hybrid academies—it does NOT apply to traditional parent-led co-ops. Section 4.2 covers co-ops; students may take as many classes at their co-op as their parents choose without triggering institutional course caps.

🗳️ Myth #2: The NCHC Changed the 51% Rule.
FICTION: The 51% Founders' Rule is a brand-new mandate forced upon member organizations.
➡️FACT: The Founders' Rule was officially ratified and codified by the member programs themselves in a landslide vote in December of 2025.
THE REALITY: Following extensive association-wide discussion/vote, the Codification Vote resulted in well over 90% of member voters affirming and ratifying the NCHC’s interpretation and enforcement of the 51% Founders' Rule. The standard reflects the overwhelming democratic mandate of our member organizations, affirming over a dozen hardship denials from 9 states over a 12-month period leading up to the vote.

🏫 Myth #3: The 3-Day Academy Rule
FICTION: If a student goes to an academy for only 2 days, they can take as many core classes as they want.
➡️FACT: The NCHC has strict limits on both attendance and course counts to protect the 51% Founder's Rule.
THE RULE: Under Section 4.4, a student is ineligible if they violate ANY ONE of the following structural limits:
The Course Limit (4.4a): A student taking 4 or more core classes from a single institution is ineligible, regardless of how few days they physically attend.
The Attendance Limit (4.4b): A student is ineligible if they physically attend an outside facility for core academic instruction 3 or more days per week. A 3rd day is ONLY permitted if it is spent exclusively on non-core extracurriculars (athletics, electives, study hall, chapel, or lab-only sessions).

🤝 Myth #4: Section 4.4 Violations & Alternative Schooling Pathways
FICTION: If a player exceeds Section 4.4 course counts or uses an alternative schooling structure, they are banned from stepping on the court for an NCHC team or at NCHC Events!
➡️FACT: The NCHC actively offers Provisional Pathways.
THE REALITY: We recognize modern schooling offers endless unique setups! The NCHC provides Provisional Approvals for teams utilizing players during the season who exceed Section 4.4 institutional limits or field a player one year over-age for roster viability.
HOW IT WORKS: A Provisionally Approved (Section 1.17) team is treated like a "Team USA" exhibition team at NCHC Postseason events. Your team gets to play, compete, and enjoy the NCHC event experience, while maintaining the structural integrity of the official Championship / Gold Ball brackets (Section 1.17(b).

💻 Myth #5: The "Online at Home" Loophole
FICTION: Any online school is eligible as long as the student does the work at home on a laptop.
➡️FACT: The NCHC is curriculum-neutral, but we respect legal institutional enrollment. We protect private, parent-directed online curriculums, but explicitly restrict state-funded school district online schooling.
THE RULE: Families utilizing private, parent-funded online programs (like LUOA, Abeka, Bob Jones, Enlightium, etc.) However, if a student is enrolled in a state-funded local school district, the state legally classifies them as a public school student. Under Section 2.3(c), these students are INELIGIBLE. Doing coursework on a laptop at home does not bypass this structural limit.

🎓 Myth #6: Academic Reclassification vs. Exhausted Eligibility
FICTION: A homeschool student can NEVER reclassify to gain an extra year of athletic eligibility.
➡️FACT: Reclassification IS permitted—UNLESS eligibility was already exhausted at a previous school or athletic association.
THE HARD RED LINE: Parents are free to reclassify an underclassman to grant an extra year of high school eligibility, provided the student stays under the absolute 18U age cutoffs. HOWEVER, if a player completes their Senior year on a public/private school team—or competes for 4 years under a state high school athletic association—they CANNOT transfer to a homeschool team and reclassify for a 5th year. Once high school eligibility is exhausted at an institutional program, it is permanently exhausted everywhere.

🛑 Myth #7: Playing Over-Age Players in Regular Season Games
FICTION: NCHC rules strictly forbid an over-age player from playing in local regular-season games.
➡️FACT: This is fiction with mandatory regular-season disclosure rules!
THE RULE: Member organizations can suit up players locally wherever they see fit during the regular season. However, at NCHC-sanctioned events, players MUST be strictly age-eligible.
MANDATORY DISCLOSURE & SEEDING: If your team plays an over-age player in regular-season games against other NCHC member teams:
1. You MUST formally notify your opponent before the game that you are using an over-age player.
2. For district, regional, and national postseason seeding purposes, any game in which an over-age player competed DOES NOT COUNT as a loss for your opponent if they lose to you. Roster transparency protects everyone’s seeding integrity!
