Ever wonder why there’s always another project happening at the farm? Ben has a few thoughts. 😂

This week, he’s making his Grove Life debut with a peek at how we work together - and how a conversation about one little problem can turn into months of planning, building, and figuring things out.

From irrigation to bridges to our mobile elderberry freezer, every project seems to open the door to the next possibility. Apparently, that’s what happens when you pair my enthusiasm with an engineer who starts wondering how to make it work. 💜

❄️ Can we turn an ordinary upright freezer into a DIY blast freezer for our elderberries?

That was the big experiment behind our solar-powered mobile freezer trailer!

We're sharing what worked, what didn't, and what we plan to improve next season. It's definitely a process of trial and error!

🐝 Apparently, the bees did not read my project plan.

I started 2026 hoping to turn one thriving honeybee colony into three. Instead, I'm heading into winter with just three frames of bees, almost no honey, and a queen who stubbornly refuses to give up.

Add a nasty wax moth infestation to the mix, and it's been quite the learning experience!

☀️ The mobile blast freezer is officially off-grid!

Part 3 of our DIY Mobile Blast Freezer series is up on Grove Life - and this time we’re getting into the solar power system.

It wasn’t exactly a neat, orderly build. We were putting it together during elderberry harvest, while the berries kept ripening whether we were ready or not. 😅 But we ended up with much more than a freezer: we now have a mobile, enclosed, off-grid processing and freezing workspace that can go where we need it.

🍓It started innocently enough with a group bulk order. Three trays sounded perfectly reasonable at the time.

The newest Grove Life follows my latest adventure: turning part of our backyard into a 135-plant strawberry patch. Along the way, I’ve been learning about fall planting, building beds without a working tiller, drip irrigation, surviving a September heat wave, and the emerging strawberry disease Neopestalotiopsis (Neo-P).

And because nothing around here can ever be just a simple planting project, I’ve also been crawling around the garden with a measuring cup trying to figure out exactly how much water my drip lines are delivering. 😂

The goal now: get all 135 June-bearing plants established before winter and see what happens next spring. At least that’s the theory. Ask me again next June. 🍓

The mobile elderberry freezer trailer is starting to look like an actual harvest workspace! 🚚

Part 2 of our DIY build is up on Grove Life.

This time, we’re covering the details that turned our cleaned-out construction trailer into something we could actually use during harvest: cleanable PVC walls, reinforced tie-down points, ventilation, lighting and power, a roof leak we weren’t expecting...and finally moving all of the equipment in.

And because no farm project goes exactly according to plan, I’m also sharing the growing list of things we’d do differently if we started over - including a few lessons we learned the hard way. 😅

The biggest payoff? We now have a mobile workspace where we can clean and freeze elderberries right at the farm, rather than waiting to transport them somewhere else.

Next up: solar power. ☀️

New on Grove Life: Elderberry jelly - and a Missouri cottage food answer that just changed.

Earlier this year, when I started looking into whether home-canned elderberry jelly could safely be sold under Missouri cottage food law, the guidance I received was essentially “not without process-authority evaluation.”

Then MU Extension kept digging.

In August, they published new guidance confirming that properly prepared traditional elderberry jam and jelly can qualify for home-kitchen production under Missouri cottage food law.

That “properly prepared” part matters. Elderberries are a low-acid fruit, so this isn’t a green light to grab any recipe, water-bath can it, and head to market. Formulation, acidification, sugar concentration, processing, testing and recordkeeping all matter.

In the newest Grove Life, I dig into what changed, why the food-safety science matters, where to find scientifically supported elderberry jam and jelly recipes - and what this means for small Missouri elderberry growers and producers.

And yes…this new guidance means there is now elderberry jelly at Twilight Grove. 💜
