West Yellowstone, MT, July 22, 2023— The Custer Gallatin National Forest, Hebgen Lake Ranger District today implemented an emergency area closure west of the community of West Yellowstone, Montana to address bear activity creating unsafe conditions. The closure is in effect from July 22, 2023 until August 25, 2023 or until rescinded and prohibits all human entry.
Generally, the Buttermilk Area Closure is located about 8 miles west of West Yellowstone. It follows the Continental Divide Trail (Forest Service Trail #116) from the trailhead near Targhee Pass on Highway 20 south to the confluence with Cream Creek Road (Forest Service Road #1703 and Road 484). The area closure follows these roads to the east and north back to the Forest Service boundary just south of Highway 20 and to the west to connect with the Continental Divide Trail (Trail #116).
It is also important to remember general bear safety in bear country. Carry bear spray and have it readily accessible, travel in groups, make lots of noise, watch for signs of bears in the area, and hike during daylight hours. Keeping a clean camp is essential for your safety, the safety of other forest users, and wildlife.
