A familiar voice has returned to the landscape as the diederick cuckoo arrives back in Zululand for the summer months.
Known for its striking green plumage and distinctive call, - a clear, repetitive "dee-dee-dee-DERIK" - it's return to Babanango Game reserve is a welcome sign of the changing seasons.
The diederick cuckoo is a summer migrant to much of southern Africa, arriving to breed during the warmer summer months - following the onset of summer rains and the resulting abundance of insects.
Did you know that the diederick cuckoo, among other cuckoo species, is considered a 'brood parasite'? This means they lay their eggs in the nests of other birds, mostly in the nests of weavers, where the chicks are then raised by the 'host' parents.
Have you heard the ringing call of the diederick cuckoo before?
