Taking a road trip to Hermanus? Here’s a local stop worth knowing about.

Just before you settle into the coastal charm of Hermanus, you’ll find Vleisstaat in Onrus, a local butcher and deli bringing the journey from farm to plate a little closer.

Vleisstaat specialises in a selection of mutton, lamb, beef and venison, with a focus on quality meat sourced from the farm.

Step inside and you’ll find freshly prepared sandwiches, local favourites and a selection of biltong and dried meat, perfect for taking along on the rest of your road trip.

For visitors exploring the Overberg, places like these offer a small taste of the region beyond the usual tourist stops. A chance to slow down and discover the flavours that are part of everyday life here.

So, if Hermanus is on your itinerary, consider making a stop along the way.

Some experiences are worth planning a trip around.

Every year, Southern Right Whales make their way from the Antarctic waters to the sheltered coastline of Hermanus, returning to Walker Bay to mate, calve and raise their young. From June to November, these incredible visitors become part of the landscape, with August to October offering some of the best opportunities to see them.

Hermanus is renowned for its land based whale watching, with whales often coming remarkably close to shore along the famous cliff path. It’s a bucket list experience that feels even more special when you can simply pause, look out across Walker Bay and watch them in their natural environment.

Whale season is here. Perhaps it’s time to add Hermanus to your list?

Spring is starting to show up across the Western Cape and there’s no better time to get out and explore.🌿

One experience worth adding to your Cape Town itinerary? A hike up Lion’s Head.

The trail winds through indigenous fynbos and rocky paths before opening up to some of the most rewarding views in the city, stretching across Camps Bay, the Atlantic coastline and the City Bowl.

It’s an experience that reminds you why Cape Town belongs on any bucket list. From the changing landscapes to the fresh mountain air and the view waiting at the top, Lion’s Head offers a different way to experience the city.

Some places are best experienced one step at a time.

There’s a certain magic to the gardens at Camps Bay Retreat when the Clivias begin to bloom. 🌿

Tucked beneath the trees, their vibrant orange flowers bring colour to the shaded corners of the estate, appearing for only a short time each year.

Clivias are more than just a beautiful garden feature. Part of the Amaryllidaceae family, all six species are naturally found only in South Africa. Slow growing and long lived, they can take several years to flower from seed, making every bloom worth noticing.

A little burst of colour, a sign of the changing season and another reason to slow down and look a little closer at nature.

This is Camps Bay Retreat, where the gardens always have a story to tell.

This week the Chairman’s Bucket List takes us back to Hermanus, where some of the best mornings begin with a walk through town and the promise of good coffee.

Tucked away on High Street, Black Medicine is an early morning favourite worth seeking out. Grab a coffee, order a freshly baked croissant and watch Hermanus slowly come to life before setting off for the day.

Recommendation: Take the morning stroll from Zzzone Adventure Basecamp and try the croissant, possibly the best you’ll ever have.
