Want to start hiking but do not know where to start? Here are the 10 Essentials of Hiking:
Water, and filtration & purification system
Layers (mid, puffy, shell, rain jacket)
Fire essentials
Lights
First aid essentials
Battery Packs
PLB
1. Navigation: map, compass, altimeter, GPS device, personal locator beacon (PLB) or satellite messenger.
2. Headlamp: plus extra batteries.
3. Sun protection: sunglasses, sun-protective clothes, hat and sunscreen. Please consider tablets that will assist you with prolonged sun protection.
4. First aid including foot care and insect repellent (as needed).
5. Knife plus a gear repair kit, please carry duct tape, it can fix almost anything.
6. Fire matches, lighter, tinder and/or stove (I get for a day-hike that this may be over-kill, but please consider where you may be hiking, and the possibility of getting lost).
7. Shelter carried at all times (can be a light emergency bivy).
8. Extra food Beyond the minimum expectation.
9. Extra water Beyond the minimum expectation. Don‘t play with hydration. Consider water filtration and purification systems in case you run out.
10. Extra clothes Beyond the minimum expectation. Pack minimum layers i.e. base, midtier, puffy, shell.
11. If you do get lost, stay put. Finding a moving target is almost impossible

Bottles or bladders? I love the convenience of bladders, but they are impossible to clean on a multi-day thru-hike. Why not consider a tube connector that will turn any water bottle into a bladder, that means you can clean or change it easier! 😁♥️🥾
