Water for Wildlife, Hope for the Future

In conservation, some of the most practical solutions can make the greatest difference.

With valued support from the Mzuri Wildlife Foundation, Muchinga Adventures has been working to establish water sources within Upper Lupande Game Management Area as part of our ongoing efforts to reduce human-wildlife conflict.

During the dry season, natural water sources become increasingly scarce. Wildlife searching for water can move closer to villages and community areas, increasing the potential for conflict between people and animals. Strategically located water within the GMA helps wildlife remain within its natural range and reduces the pressure that brings wildlife and communities into conflict.

Working in a remote and truly wild landscape comes with its own challenges. The regular presence of lions, buffalo and hyenas around the drilling sites was a powerful reminder of the healthy wildlife populations this landscape supports — and even resulted in one drilling team withdrawing from the area.

But perseverance paid off.

We are delighted that a new water source has now been successfully established and pump tested, helping to provide reliable water where it can make a real difference.

This is conservation with a practical purpose: keeping wildlife wild, reducing pressure on neighbouring communities, and creating conditions where people and wildlife can coexist.

We are grateful to the Mzuri Wildlife Foundation for contributing towards this initiative and joining us in supporting practical, long-term solutions to human-wildlife conflict in Upper Lupande.

Water for wildlife. Hope for the future.

There is something special about watching an aircraft touch down on a remote bush airstrip.

For many safari destinations across Zambia, air travel isn’t simply about convenience—it’s the gateway to some of Africa’s last truly wild places, where wilderness begins the moment the wheels meet the ground.

This King Air E90 from Staravia, arriving at Shiwa N’gandu is a reminder of the professionalism and reliability that make these remote journeys possible. We have been privileged to work with the Staravia team for more than 30 years, safely connecting guests with some of Zambia’s most remarkable wilderness areas.

Here’s to the people behind the scenes who help make every safari adventure possible.

Celebrating Heritage in the Heart of the Luangwa Valley

On 8 August 2026, the K***a people will gather at the Lubaneni Traditional Grounds in Mambwe District, Eastern Province, for the annual Malaila Traditional Ceremony—a celebration that honours the history, identity and enduring traditions of one of Zambia’s oldest cultural communities.

The ceremony is hosted under the leadership of His Royal Highness Senior Chief Nsefu, whose traditional authority extends across Upper Lupande Game Management Area, where Muchinga Adventures is privileged to operate. For generations, the K***a people have lived alongside the remarkable wildlife of the Luangwa Valley, and Malaila reflects that unique connection between culture, the natural world and community.

Rooted in the story of a community overcoming a great challenge, the ceremony celebrates courage, unity and resilience. Through traditional dances, royal customs and the retelling of ancestral history, each generation is entrusted with preserving the values and traditions that continue to shape K***a identity today.

Muchinga Adventures is proud to support this year’s Malaila Traditional Ceremony, helping to ensure that people from across the Chiefdom can participate in this important cultural occasion.

Conservation is about more than protecting wildlife. It is also about respecting the people whose heritage is inseparable from these landscapes. By supporting traditions such as Malaila, we help preserve the cultural legacy of the communities who have cared for and lived alongside the Luangwa Valley for centuries.

We are honoured to support His Royal Highness Senior Chief Nsefu, the K***a Royal Establishment and the people of Upper Lupande as they celebrate a living heritage that continues to inspire future generations.

At Muchinga Adventures, conservation is about far more than wildlife. It is about investing in the people who call these landscapes home.

We were proud to provide community football teams in Upper Lupande Game Management Area with soccer uniforms and footballs, helping young people come together through sport, teamwork and healthy competition.

Soccer has an incredible ability to unite communities, build confidence, develop leadership and create opportunities for young people to thrive. We hope these uniforms and footballs will inspire many memorable matches and encourage the next generation to pursue their dreams—both on and off the field.

This initiative would not have been possible without the kindness and generosity of Amy and Craig Bade from Michigan, USA. Their support has made a meaningful difference to communities thousands of miles from home, and we are deeply grateful for their commitment to improving the lives of others.

Together, we are building stronger communities, because conservation succeeds when people thrive.

The Bangweulu Swamps are not only one of Africa’s great wilderness areas, they are also a place of profound historical significance.

During their last safari together, Johnny and Don Black visited the memorial, where the great explorer and missionary David Livingstone spent his final days in 1873. After his death, his loyal companions, Susi and Chuma, carried his body more than 1,500 kilometres to the coast so it could be returned to Britain, while his heart was buried beneath a tree in Zambia—a lasting symbol of his deep connection to Africa.

Standing in this peaceful place, surrounded by the landscapes that shaped so much of African exploration, is a powerful reminder that Bangweulu is rich not only in wildlife but also in history.

Every safari with Muchinga Adventures is about more than an unforgettable experience, it is an investment in conservation and the people who call these wild places home.

The wildlife quotas we hunt under are science-based and carefully managed to ensure sustainable populations for generations to come. Every animal licence contributes directly to the local communities living alongside wildlife, helping create tangible benefits from conserving the natural resources they protect every day.

When wildlife has value, it has a future. Through responsible, ethical safari hunting, we are proud to support conservation, provide incentives for habitat protection, and help improve livelihoods in some of Zambia’s most remote communities.

Thank you to every guest who chooses to hunt with purpose. Together, we are helping ensure that both wildlife and rural communities continue to thrive.

There are few places in Africa that capture the imagination quite like the Bangweulu Swamps.

Gliding silently through winding channels by canoe, surrounded by endless papyrus and alive with birdsong, is an experience unlike any other. Every bend offers something new, from spectacular birdlife and the iconic black lechwe moving effortlessly through the wetlands, to the elusive sitatunga perfectly adapted to this watery wilderness. Buffalo, too, find refuge in this remarkable ecosystem.

Bangweulu is a place of tranquillity, adventure, and extraordinary biodiversity, a reminder that some of Africa’s greatest treasures are found far from the beaten track.
