What happens when the music of the Caribbean meets J.S. Bach — and the result travels all the way to Greece? 🇦🇬🇬🇷🎻

This performance features an arrangement by Dr. George Roberts combining Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins with a Trinidadian folk song, ‘Every time ah pass’.

Performed in Greece by the N-Stancy String Orchestra, directed by Vivi Gkeka.

The arrangement was originally written for mandolin, pan and piano. For this performance, the mandolin and pan parts were adapted for strings, giving the work a fascinating new character.

Vivi Gkeka, a concert mandolinist and teacher, makes an annual journey to Greece for concerts and master classes with her students. Some of her more advanced students took on this arrangement and, by all accounts, thoroughly enjoyed learning and performing it.

For me, this project demonstrates something fundamental about music:

Music can cross oceans, languages, cultures and centuries.

Caribbean musical traditions and European classical music may come from very different worlds, but they can meet, interact and create something new.

And the musical journey continues. I’ve already promised a quintet arrangement of an Antiguan calypso for a future project!

Cynthia Fisher has been performing as an operatic soloist in the USA and internationally for more than two decades. She brings her remarkable vocal artistry to Musings with this stirring rendition of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Love Changes Everything.”

After only one week in Antigua, a shared passion for music led to our meeting and ultimately this collaboration. This is our first musical video together—and there will be more!

This has truly been a labour of love. To make these musical Musings more accessible, I have launched a YouTube channel where I will regularly share new musical performances and projects as they emerge.

Elvis Presley’s Can’t help falling in love

These two young people give us cause for optimism about the future.

Isabel and Tristan Nicholas are not only gifted young musicians; they are young people who are already using their talents to enrich the wider community.

Their musical achievements speak for themselves. Both have been earning distinctions in their external music examinations. Tristan plays the piano for Mass at the Anglican Cathedral every Sunday, while Isabel has served as first violinist—and at times concertmaster—with the Antigua Junior Youth Symphony Orchestra.

But their talents extend far beyond music. They are academically accomplished and both represent Antigua in swimming, having qualified for the upcoming Carifesta Games. They also play basketball for their school teams. And Isabel has been pursuing ballet for the past five years—nearly half her life!

Exemplary young people indeed.

For this performance, Tristan has arranged Elvis Presley’s much-loved classic, Can’t Help Falling in Love, with Isabel on violin and Tristan on piano. It is a beautiful example not only of their musicianship, but also of the creativity and discipline that these young people are developing at such an early age.

I am especially pleased to share this performance with you.
