Albany Fishponds
Albany Fishponds, located between Festing Street and Carlilse Street, Mount Melville is said to have been constructed by convicts in the 1870s under the direction of Resident Magistrate Hare. Although transportation of convicts ceased in 1868, there were still Ticket of Leave men based in Albany and surrounding areas during the 1870s. These men, former convicts, or current prisoners could have contributed to the work.
The fishponds consist of three ponds – one large and two smaller and were built to accommodate and acclimatise trout and other freshwater fish in Western Australia. They are located on a natural soak originally used by the Menang people.
Once the top pond filled with water it overflowed and filled the smaller ponds finally exiting through underground pipes to the locomotive sheds. The ponds were to be used as a hatchery for trout and perch but the project was unsuccessful. Their development was part of the international acclimatisation movement where plant and animal species were exchanged between European countries and colonies.
