Welcome, it's almost Winter in the Mary Valley, and here is a quick update from Autumn at Amamoor Homestead.

Autumn and Summer have been a productive and transformative season across Amamoor Homestead, with several major projects now complete and new experiences ready for guests to enjoy.

There is a certain change to the air with crisp mornings, spectacular sunsets and cool evenings to be spent around the campfire. Summer saw a wonderful mango crop, thoroughly enjoyed by our guests and herd

Projects Wrapped Up
Amamoor Arena Paddock Fencing — Our brand‑new fencing around the Arena Paddock is now complete. This upgrade gives guests a safe, close encounter with our cattle as they graze the dam surrounds. It’s become a favourite viewing spot already.

New Chicken Enclosure & Coop — With our flock growing faster than expected, we’ve built a spacious new enclosure and coop. The hens are thriving, and guests can now enjoy watching their antics from the homestead gardens.

Lantana Removal — Major clearing has been completed at:

Downtown Damo (back of the mountain)

Robyn’s Range (Kandanga Gully Paddock) This work has opened up fresh grazing areas and improved the health of our native bushland.

Dam Water Fountain Installation — Our new aeration fountain is now running beautifully, keeping the dam water clean, oxygenated, and visually stunning at sunset

Be aware on the roads, turtles migrating 😁.
So why did the turtle cross the road ? With the recent rain there will be increased movement of turtles because it softens soil, boosts humidity, improves scent detection, and often signals good conditions for feeding, mating, or relocating.
We picked this little one up in the middle of Kandanga Amamoor Road down from the Homestead. We have relocated him and hopefully he likes his new home and doesn’t do it again. 🐢

Restoring the Rainforest on Amamoor Homestead ‘Nutting the Mountain’

Spent the morning up on the slopes of Amamoor Homestead, spreading Bunya pine seeds through our pockets of old‑growth forest. There’s something grounding about putting a species back into a landscape where it once dominated — especially one as iconic and ecologically important as the Bunya.

Bunya pines aren’t just beautiful giants. They’re upper‑canopy rainforest species, and that matters. A healthy rainforest canopy acts like the engine room of the ecosystem:

• Canopy closure regulates temperature and humidity, creating the stable microclimate that rainforest species depend on.
• Vertical structure — from forest floor to emergent layer — increases habitat diversity, supporting everything from fungi and insects to gliders and fruit‑eating birds.
• Deep‑rooted canopy trees stabilise slopes, reduce erosion, and improve long‑term soil moisture retention.
• Seed and fruit cycles from species like Bunya feed a huge range of wildlife, boosting biodiversity from the ground up.

By re‑establishing canopy species on the mountain’s edge, we’re helping the forest reclaim its natural architecture — encouraging shade‑tolerant understory plants, improving habitat connectivity, and nudging the whole system back toward a functioning subtropical rainforest.

It’s slow work, but it’s legacy work. These seeds will outlive all of us, and that’s exactly the point.

Here’s to rainforesting the Mary Valley, one Bunya at a time.

January is mango season at Amamoor Homestead, even the cattle are enjoying the this year’s crop.
