BARELLAN (view pic on FULLSCREEN) - The name of Barellan is an indigenous expression that literally means "the meeting of the waters". The railway reached Barellan way back in 1908 and a post office was opened April 1909. The Barellan "Kangaroos" Australian Rules team joined the Northern Riverina Football League in 1993 and had a great run of success with senior football premierships in – 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2011. The "Barellan Rams" compete in the Group 17 Rugby League competition. They were Clayton Cup winners as the best local team in the state in 1999 and 2002. Barellan has four all-weather tennis courts located on Mulga Street. This is also the location of the Evonne Goolagong-Cawley Wall, a place where as a young tennis player, Evonne Goolagong-Cawley would spend hours hitting a ball against the wall. Barellan is within the Narrandera Shire and has a population of approx. 300. The community hosts events celebrating rural traditions, The Good Old Days Festival previously attempting world records for large teams of working Clydesdale horses pulling wagons.

The Commercial Hotel will be running a bus to Les’ funeral, departing the pub at 11:30am, ahead of the 12:30pm graveside service at Barellan Cemetery.

Les was one of Barellan’s biggest supporters, a familiar face, a great supporter of our town and sporting clubs, and a character who was truly one of a kind.

Come along as we farewell Les, share a few stories and maybe have that elusive ‘one’ he always promised us 🍺.

Please get in touch if you’d like a seat on the bus.
