Whether you’re a Geelong local or visitor, chances are you’ve eaten at ALMA Restaurant, Felix Restaurant, Barwon Edge, Batesford Hotel, The club by Felix or the ALMA Food Truck (and if you haven’t, you should!)

It all started when ALMA was founded by a group of great friends nine years ago. Amazingly, they’re all still involved with the business. Today, we’re getting to know one of them, Jesse Hughes, a little better.

What Jesse loves most about Geelong and the Bellarine’s tourism and hospitality industry is the sense of community. From recommending each other's businesses to sharing resources and support, it's a network where everyone benefits from each other's success. The place he loves to recommend? Portarlington Mussel Boat Tours.

As a trained chef with a keen palate for wine, it’s no surprise that Jesse thinks visitors to the region should drink all the food and drink all the wine. His recommends sampling as many wineries, breweries and distilleries as possible, enjoy the abundance of local produce, then unwind with a treatment and mineral spa experience at Lon Retreat. Sounds perfect to us!

As many of you guessed last week, The Batesford Hotel has lived many lives under many names.

We were lucky enough for historian Martine to weigh in, confirming the names dating back to the 1840s: The Batesford, The Dog Rocks, The Derwent, The Marrabool. But she also shared something that we found... curious.

According to Martine, one Matthew Baird purchased the Marrabool Inn from C. Ruffle in February 1844.

If that name rings a bell, it's because one of our current owners shares the same name. 182 years apart, and Matthew Baird owns The Marrabool Inn / The Batesford Hotel.

Call it spooky. Call it a coincidence. Call it serendipitous. We're not sure either, but we think it's pretty cool nonetheless!

4 delicious reasons to pop into The Batesford this weekend:

1. Steak served with herbed green beans and broccolini, and arguably the best chat potatoes in Batesford

2. Pizza! So many to choose from, all of them available for dine in or takeaway (pick up only)

3. Parmis, with two cheesy choices to pick from: Chicken or eggplant

4. Moroccan Spiced Lamb Shank. Just trust us on this one
