Everything in the cottage has a reason for being here. This old chair meets all three of my criteria, it’s useful, it has a story and I think it’s beautiful. It languished in my shed for years. One day I was going to reupholster it. But I think I like it just the way it is.
What do you think, Should I reupholster it?

Did you know???? I make all the doona covers and kitchen linen myself. I used to make all the linen in the cottage until I couldn’t keep up.
I import pure linen made to my specification straight from a fifth generation mill in Europe.
Did you know?
Linen is made from flax, it’s the most beautiful plant (see pic 2 & 4) and it’s one of the world’s most sustainable crops -good for the environment, good for you.
Now I choose and recommend CULTIVER for sheets. I’m not sponsored, I just love them because they’re bloody good sheets and they’re open and transparent with their sourcing and manufacturing.

Hidden luxury: heated floors.

Discover the joy of walking barefoot through the cottage on a cold winter morning and finding the floor already warm. You don’t notice it for the first few seconds. Then you realise — you couldn’t go back.

The fireplace does the loud, obvious work. The heated floors do the quiet work. Together they make winter at Simpson Cottage feel like the season was invented for staying inside, in your socks, with nowhere to be.

It’s the kind of place where you light the fire on Friday, stay in all weekend if you want to, and only put proper shoes on when you absolutely have to.

Tell me something. When was the last time you truly slowed down and felt your shoulders drop?

I’d love to know. Because the most common thing guests tell me when they’ve stayed at Simpson Cottage is that they didn’t realise how much they needed to. To stop. To slow down.

They notice their shoulders drop. Somewhere along the route, they’ve softened without noticing.

The unpacking and stocking of the fridge isn’t rushed. Once they’ve settled in and sat down with that first drink, they sigh and let out the breath they didn’t know they were holding. The things they were caught up on are quietly abandoned — because something else has caught their attention. A bird. The way the light is hitting the sandstone. The smell of the bush.

I always struggled to put that feeling into words. But guests have solved that.

They tell me they can’t recall when they last felt so relaxed and at ease. It’s the part everyone remembers the most.

One hour from Sydney. A world away from everything.
