When kangaroos defenders are feeling miserable about our government's cruel and barbaric treatment of kangaroos - and other wildlife - along comes the incisive wit of a local cartoonist from Canberra CityNews who exposes some realities.
The ACT politician holding the rifle is Suzanne Orr, ACT Minister for the Environment, who oversees the mass slaughter of kangaroos and wallabies in Canberra nature reserves and the killing of dingoes in Namadgi national park.
Please send her a message telling her what you think. Her email is [email protected]

They call it a ‘sanctuary’, but for the kangaroos and wallabies trapped inside, it’s anything but. The 23km “predator-proof fence” doesn’t protect them - instead, it ensures that when the shooting begins, they have no chance of escape.

For this reason, the killing of kangaroos in Mulligans Flat feels particularly evil.

This winter, 375 kangaroos will be shot here by ACT Government contracted shooters. Hundreds of joeys will be pulled from their mothers’ pouches to be decapitated or bludgeoned to death. Countless wallabies will suffer the same fate.

We will continue to show up and speak up for the kangaroos who are targeted by the killing program, which continues until 31 July. Follow Save Canberra’s Kangaroos and Animal Liberation ACT to stay up to date - we will be outside reserves every night bearing witness, capturing footage and making sure they know we are watching.

Oh the hypocrisy of the ACT Government. Sigh. Or is it a case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing. Kangaroos are killed every year in Mulligans Flat ‘sanctuary’. Wallabies too.
Beginning tonight, the ACT government's shooters will go into reserves and sanctuaries such as this and blast away at peaceful, innocent eastern grey kangaroos...3,633 is their target this year. They never mention the joeys who will be bashed to death or decapitated...it's all so HUMANE they claim. 💔🦘💔

This weekend in the iconic Mt Ainslie Nature Reserve in Canberra, one of our volunteers passed visitors to the reserve taking photos of a kangaroo and informed them the animal would likely be shot over the coming weeks. The look of horror and disbelief on the visitors’ faces said it all. Killing thousands of local native animals in the remnants of their own natural habitat because humans have destroyed the rest of the environment is not only unethical, it is highly incompetent. As Isaac Asimov, the well-known scientist, said, ‘VIOLENCE IS THE LAST REFUGE OF THE INCOMPETENT’. In this case the killing cannot achieve anything other than inflicting pain and suffering on sentient animals. Clearly the ACT Government should be valuing these animals, not only for their intrinsic value, but also for their enormous appeal to visitors to the nation’s so-called Bush Capital.

To oppose the upcoming shooting of 3,633 kangaroos in ACT nature reserves:
1. Write to the ACT Environment Minister Suzanne Orr ([email protected]).
2. Come to a rally against the cull in Canberra on 10 June 2026 at 12pm: https://www.facebook.com/events/1499892221068652
3. Follow Save Canberra's Kangaroos and Animal Liberation ACT .

Only 1 day left until the ACT Government’s kangaroo killing program begins.

There are a number of ways you can help oppose the killing of kangaroos:

1. Join us for reserve watching

Join us in monitoring reserves during the killing program. Our role is simple: be present, observe, document what we can and let the government know that people are paying attention. Direct message Animal Liberation ACT if you are interested.

2. Attend our rally on Wednesday 10 June 12pm outside the Legislative Assembly.

Come along and stand with others who oppose the killing of kangaroos. Public pressure matters, and showing up sends a clear message that many people do not support this violence against kangaroos.

3. Send the ACT Environment Minister an email to demand an end to this cruelty: [email protected]

Tell the Minister that you oppose the killing of kangaroos and believe these animals deserve protection, not persecution. Politicians need to hear directly from members of the community.

4. Share this post on your story and repost it.

Please let us know in the comments what action you’ve taken. Every email, every rally attendee, and every reserve watcher makes a difference.

The ACT Government has announced its kangaroo killing program for this year with over 3000 kangaroos in the firing line. This number doesn’t even include the estimated one thousand joeys who will be ripped from their mother’s pouches and either decapitated or bludgeoned to death 💔

This target is the second largest in the history of the ACT Government’s kangaroo killing program 😭

Let’s not forget that this kangaroo killing program that they dress up as a “conservation cull” is nothing but cruel and unnecessary. At the end of the day it is never going to be right to destroy families and kill mothers and their babies in the name of conservation, profit or land management.

Please join us in calling for an end to this senseless killing by joining us at our rally next Wednesday, 10 June, 12pm, outside the ACT Legislative Assembly ✊🏼

Can’t make it to the rally? Here are other ways to call for an end to this killing:

📝Write a letter to the Canberra Times and hope that it gets published

In a world where you can be anything....be kind.
This is beautiful Bebe. Her mum was killed and a kind human rescued her. Wildcare volunteers raised this feisty little joey until she and her buddy, Daph, were big enough to move to a pre-release enclosure with ten other joeys. Months later, the gates were opened and she was released.....safe from cars, guns and humans. Hopefully, one day, she'll have her own joey. We'll keep you posted. ❤🦘
