🌿 Creating a Room That Feels Like You… 🌿

There’s something I absolutely love about creating a beautiful room. And it’s not just seeing the finished result… it’s the process of bringing it all together.

Just like creating a garden, it starts with a feeling. What do you love? What reflects who you are? What makes your heart happy? ❤️

For me, there’s always one very important question…

✨ Would I love to sleep in this room?
✨ Would I feel comfortable here?
✨ Would I love this space?

Because it’s about so much more than how a room looks. It’s the comfort, the colours, the little touches, the feeling of being somewhere special. Even the artwork on the wall has a story — and yes, I created that myself! 🎨

❤️🌿 A LOVE AFFAIR WITH THE GARDEN

I think I was born to love gardens!

There is something magical about wandering amongst the colours, textures and beauty of nature. I lose myself in the garden, and honestly, my heart sings.

Just when I think I've seen it all, something catches my eye and makes me fall in love all over again. ❤️

These beautiful Crotons caught my eye yesterday as I wandered around the gardens here at Paperbark Retreat Cooktown, and I just had to share them with you.

🌿 YOU CAN'T HAVE TOO MANY CROTONS! 🌿

I can't say enough about crotons! They are such wonderful plants for a tropical garden, and I love how easily they grow from cuttings. There are hundreds of named varieties, with an amazing range of colours, leaf shapes and patterns. From bright yellows and oranges to reds, pinks, greens and deep purples, they really brighten up a garden.

I take cuttings from established plants, remove most of the leaves to reduce moisture loss, and get them growing in water or pots. I find stems about the thickness of my index finger work well. Keep them warm and moist, and with a little patience, you'll soon have new plants to put in the garden. 🌱

We're now extending the garden along the edge where it transitions into the bush. I'll get my crotons established first, then plant them out when the wet season arrives and nature gives them a good start.

I've also got ginger corms and ferns ready to go in. Every wet season, our White Christmas lilies, also known as Cardwell lilies, appear in a few spots in the bush. I dig some up and move them into the garden. Their beautiful white flowers and large, deeply veined leaves will look lovely amongst the trees.

Cardwell lilies grow from bulbs and are well suited to tropical conditions, particularly sheltered spots with filtered light and moist, well-drained soil. Our mottled shade, with a little sunshine filtering through, should suit them beautifully.

We already have cycads growing naturally in this area, along with other palms that have probably sprung up from seeds spread by birds. I love being able to work with what's already growing here and create a natural transition between our landscaped gardens and the surrounding bush.

Of course, gardening is often a matter of trial and error. You plant, water and wait to see what thrives. We'll water the new plantings through the dry season to help them establish, then let the wet season do its magic!

I think a garden is about so much more than how it looks when it's finished. It's the journey — the planning, the planting, trying different things and watching it all evolve. There's always something new to do, and that's half the pleasure!

Here's how we turned old pool fencing into our new bush track entrance! 🌿
We will plant the Flame of the Forest vines to climb over the arbour, plant gingers, palms around the area, some bright coloured crotons for a vibrant tropical look and ferns to soften it. What's your favorite DIY projector around your garden?

We have a real soft spot for orchids here at Paperbark Retreat!

One of the things we love most about our tropical garden is watching nature do its thing. Some of our orchids grow naturally on the trees around the property, and this season they've put on the most beautiful show of flowers. It's such a pleasure to wander around the garden and discover what's blooming — little reminders of just how special it is to live surrounded by nature.

Did you know that many tropical orchids are epiphytes? That means they grow on trees rather than in the ground. Their roots anchor them to the bark, absorbing moisture and nutrients from rain, the air and the organic matter that collects around them. They don't harm the trees they grow on; they simply use them as a place to call home!

Orchids are fascinating plants, too. Their unusual shapes, colours and patterns have evolved to attract specific pollinators, making each flower a little masterpiece of natural design.

And then there's the striking red orchid in our video! We picked this beauty up at the Yungaburra markets, and it certainly makes a statement. In a tropical garden full of lush green foliage, that splash of red really stands out. There's something about those bold colours against all that greenery that makes you stop and take a closer look.

It's these little things that make gardening so rewarding — the unexpected blooms, the new discoveries and the simple pleasure of watching nature flourish around us.

💧 Wujal Wujal Falls – much more than a waterfall

There are some places in Cape York that you visit for the scenery… and then there are places where the landscape carries thousands of years of story.

Wujal Wujal is one of those places.

The name Wujal Wujal comes from the local Kuku Yalanji language and means “many falls”, reflecting the many waterfalls found throughout this beautiful Country.

But these falls are much more than a spectacular sight. They are part of the traditional homelands of the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people and hold deep cultural significance.

Many of the waterfalls in the area are reserved for female members of the local community, with only designated areas open for visitors. It is a reminder that this is not simply a place of natural beauty — it is Country with deep cultural meaning.

For thousands of years, the Kuku Yalanji people have lived with an intricate knowledge of this rainforest Country — its rivers, seasons, plants, animals and waters. That connection with Country continues today, with knowledge and stories passed from generation to generation.

So when we stand here watching the water rushing over the rocks, we're not simply looking at a waterfall.

We're looking at Country, culture and living history.

This is one of the reasons we love sharing Cape York with our guests. There is always another layer to discover when you take the time to look, listen and learn.
