Two short experiences at Corinna that take less than two hours and tend to be the ones guests mention first when they get home.

The Huon Pine Boardwalk is 300 metres, flat, wheelchair accessible, and takes you past a specimen of Huon Pine that has been growing in this exact spot for thousands of years. It is one of Tasmania's 60 Great Short Walks and is five minutes from the cottage.

The Whyte River paddle is different. You head out from camp by kayak, up the river through old-growth forest, watching the canopy close in above you. Platypus territory. Bring patience.

Both are free to walk. Kayak hire is available from reception.

The Arcadia II has been on the Pieman since 1970. Built in 1939, she is the only Huon Pine river cruiser still operating anywhere in the world, and the river she moves through has not changed much since.

The cruise takes around four and a half hours return. Downstream to Pieman Heads, where the tannin-dark river meets the wild Southern Ocean, then back upstream through forest that closes in on both banks.

Lunch is on board. The guide knows the river properly.

This is what a wildlife encounter at Corinna looks like.

No zoo. No schedule. No guarantee. Just a place that has been left largely alone, and the animals that come with that.

Pademelons on the lawn at dusk. Azure Kingfishers along the riverbank, gone before most people register what they saw. White-bellied Sea Eagles above the Pieman on the morning cruise. Platypus in the Whyte River if you are early enough and quiet enough.

Sometimes, if you are very lucky, something else entirely.

October is the window.

The Arcadia II is back on the river. The walking tracks are clear. The forest is doing what it only does in spring, and the summer rush has not arrived yet.

There is only one way to reach Lovers Falls. You paddle it.

About an hour downstream from Corinna along the Pieman River, roughly four to five kilometres through ancient rainforest. No road gets you there. No shortcut. Just the river, narrowing as you go, and the sound of water getting louder before you see it.

The falls drop 40 metres. There is a stairway that takes you up to the viewing platform, and most people stand there longer than they planned.
