Tasmania has some excellent short walks, many which can be found within a short drive of Deloraine. There are walks to waterfalls, caves, scenic lookouts, lakes and huts. There are also walks for the novice through to the experienced walker.
A great walk is Parson Track. Parsons Track commences at the end of Parsons Road at Caveside, 25 minutes southwest of Deloraine. There are a number of options depending on one’s experience.
A moderately easy walk is to Hills Logging Hut, which is located approximately 1 hour (2 hours return) walk from the car park. The trail follows an old logging track with trends uphill to the hut. The hut was originally build in the 1960s by Bruce Hill and has been renovated a number of times since. The most recent renovation occurred in 2018 by the Mountain Huts Preservation Society Inc. Behind the track there is a rough track to the ‘big tree’, a large Eucalyptus obliqua which is representative of the size of the trees which occurred in the area before logging.
About 5-10 minutes further up the logging track is Norms Spring and Lofty Lookout, which has glimpses through the trees to the valley below.
For the more experienced walker (moderate rating), it is possible to walk further to Haberle’s Snaring Hut (4.5 hours return from the car park) and to the top of the Great Western Tiers (6 hours return from the car park). While the track is well defined, it is uneven and has a number of steep sections/rock stairs. Haberle’s Hut was built in 1931 by a local farmers, Edward Haberle and his sons. The hut is small and was used by the family when snaring in the area.
For the experienced walker, it is also possible to return to the car park from Haberles Hut/the top of the tiers via Charlie’s Loop. This track is not well defined and requires some skills to look for track markers and to stay on the track’s alignment. It is also strongly suggested that a GPX file from Books ‘n’ All is taken and used when one isn’t sure if they are on the track.
On route, there are a number of places one can stop to have a cuppa or lunch, while admiring the local beauty of the area.
Walking one of the scores of short walks in northern Tasmania is other reason to stay more than a day at Blakes Manor Self Contained Heritage Accommodation.
