Live cello and harp in the Daintree Rainforest.

On Saturday 28 November, Echoes of the Daintree brings a free afternoon of music, roving entertainers, local market stalls and food to the Alexandra Bay Sporting Club in Diwan, just north of the Daintree River.

Award-winning cellists Dr Danielle Bentley and Alison Smith O’Connell will be joined by Far North Queensland harpist and singer Loni Fitzpatrick for a program inspired by the rainforest.

The event grew out of the recent floods, as a way to lift the spirits of our small, off-grid community and share the Daintree with locals and visitors. Bring the family, find a spot on the grass and settle in.

Locals from Cardwell to Cooktown, including the Tablelands, can cross on the Daintree Ferry for free with a Douglas Card from 1 November.

Our morning company.
There is a family of cassowaries living here. Most mornings one of them turns up near the cabins, has a look at whatever we are doing, and carries on into the gully.
Guests stop mid coffee the first time. We still do too, and we see them all the time.

Live music in the Daintree rainforest, 28 November.

Two of Queensland's finest cellists are making the trip north.
Dr Danielle Bentley is a cellist, curator and educator who has performed with Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Opera Australia, Queensland Ballet, Opera Queensland and Camerata, and collaborated with more than 100 artists including Megan Washington, Imogen Heap, Hans Zimmer, Jimmy Barnes and Diana Krall. She received the APRA AMCOS Art Music Award for Excellence by an Individual and the Australian Arts Fellowship at Omi Music Residency in New York. As a director of Collusion she co-commissioned over 40 Australian works, and she has spent years bringing music to young audiences through Musica Viva in Schools, Brisbane Powerhouse and QPAC community workshops across regional Queensland. This year she is co-directing indie classical group Ensemble Sooon, releasing an album with her father, songwriter David Bentley, and playing in Opera Australia's Anastasia.

Alison Smith O'Connell studied at the Queensland Conservatorium and the Australian National Academy of Music, then continued in Germany at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen. She spent eight years in the cello section of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra before returning to Brisbane, where she now performs as a core member of Camerata, Queensland's Chamber Orchestra, and with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. She recorded with Muses Trio on The Road Not Taken, celebrating music written by women and performed by women. Away from the cello, she loves yoga, her three daughters, and turning her suburban backyard into an edible jungle.

Where the rainforest runs straight into the reef.
The Daintree is one of the few places on earth where two World Heritage areas sit side by side, and the Lodge is between them. Rainforest at your door, the Great Barrier Reef twenty minutes down the road.

Something is always flowering somewhere in the Daintree.
Spring brings new growth through the understorey, and plenty of it sits right at eye level if you know to look. Guests often come back from the nature walk with a photo of something they can't name. Most of the time we have to look it up too.

Three nights, and a note that stayed with us.
Lucrezia wrote about the sounds, the birds, and the feeling of being genuinely close to nature. She also noticed the part we care most about, the effort that goes into protecting the forest we sit in.

Our nature walk is self-guided, unpaved and runs through forest that has been left exactly as it is.
No signs every ten metres, no crowds. Just the sound of the rainforest and whatever you happen to notice along the way.

How would you spend a day in the Daintree Rainforest?

Some guests are snorkelling the reef, zip lining through the canopy or horse riding along the beach by mid-morning. Others take the boardwalk into the forest and don't plan much else.

Either way, the day ends at our guest-only restaurant and bar, with dinner under the rainforest canopy.

Southern cassowary, still growing into its colours. 💚
The young ones stay with their father for a year or more before they go off on their own, which is why you will often see two moving through the forest together up here.

They cross the road at Diwan without looking. Slow down for them.
