Two lanes. No shoes to hire.

A full bowling alley downstairs with electronic scoring, which means the after-dinner tournament starts about four minutes after someone suggests it.

By day three, somebody usually needs a break from everybody.

It’s not a problem with the group, it’s just what happens when eighteen people share a space for a week. Most houses have nowhere to go when it hits.

Two separate living areas here, each with its own kitchen, plus seven bedrooms, two master suites with their own balconies and a 20-metre sundeck. There’s always somewhere else to be for an hour.

Which is exactly why everyone’s still getting on by Sunday.

The pool has a roof. Until it doesn’t.

Retractable shutters run the length of it, so the pool is indoors when the weather’s doing something and outdoors when it isn’t. Same water, same 20-metre sundeck, either way.

Which is how you end up swimming in July.

October is the busiest month on the bay. Most of the traffic is whales.

Humpbacks and southern rights stop in Geographe Bay to rest on their way south, and October is when the most of them pass through.

The pavilion and the north-facing balcony both look straight out over the water, so most sightings happen from a chair, usually mid-coffee. If you want a closer look, the lookouts at Cape Naturaliste are a short drive up the road.

There are still a few weeks of the season left.

By day two, everyone’s got a job nobody gave them.

There’s the one who cooks. The one who’s somehow always on drinks. The one who claims the pizza oven and won’t let anyone else near it. And the one who runs the bowling tournament like there’s a title on the line.

Then there’s the one whose entire job is doing nothing at all, which is arguably the most important role in the house.

Two kitchens, a pavilion with a BBQ and a pizza oven, and two lanes downstairs. Enough room for everyone to pick a lane.

Five hotel rooms, or one front door?

Split across a hotel, a group spends the holiday in a corridor. Someone’s on a different floor, the kids have to be quiet after eight, and everyone disappears into separate rooms the moment dinner finishes.

Seven bedrooms here, 18 people, two living areas and a pool in the middle of all of it. Same group, same nights, a completely different trip.

Somebody always says it on the drive home.

The bags go in, someone gets one last swim, and for the first ten minutes of the drive nobody says much at all. Everyone’s still in it.

Then it comes, usually from the back seat. Same time next year?

If that’s roughly how your last trip finished, the same week is usually still there if you ask early enough.

The pool is indoors. The weather doesn’t get a vote.

A grey morning in the South West doesn’t change the plan when the pool is inside. The gym sits right next to it for whoever still wants their routine, the sauna is there for afterwards, and breakfast comes with the bay in view.

Most milestone birthdays get a two-hour table.

Book a restaurant and the night runs to someone else’s schedule. There’s a sitting, there’s a bill, and there’s a taxi queue at the end of it.

The pavilion has a gas BBQ, a pizza oven and a cocktail bar, and it looks out over the bay. Eighteen people sleep on site, so nobody’s watching the clock and nobody’s driving. The cinema and the bowling alley are still there at midnight if the night wants to keep going.
