Today we recognise World Mental Health Day and World Homeless Day, two days that are deeply connected in the lives of the young women we support.
For young Aboriginal women, homelessness can take a heavy toll on social and emotional wellbeing, and the impacts of intergenerational trauma, disconnection and racism are often part of that story. A safe place to stay is the first step. Healing also needs connection to culture, community and people who genuinely care.
At Margaret Tucker Hostel, we provide short term crisis accommodation in a culturally safe home, where young women aged 15 to 18 are supported to feel safe, be heard and look after their wellbeing.
Today, we invite you to check in on the people around you, and to remember that a safe home is the foundation of good mental health.
If you know a young Aboriginal woman aged 15 to 18 who needs a safe place to stay, contact us on (03) 9086 8652.
If you or someone you know needs mental health support, 13YARN (13 92 76) offers free, confidential crisis support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, 24 hours a day.
