Did you know it’s Aussie bird count week? 🦅
The Aussie Bird Count is one of Australia’s largest citizen science projects, run annually by BirdLife Australia
It is designed to get everyday Australians out into nature to record the birds they see around them over a specific 7-day period in October.
How it Works
⏰ 20-Minute Windows: Participants spend just 20 minutes in one spot (like a backyard, local park, beach, or your favourite ecolodge)
🦜Counting: You write down the species and number of all the birds you see or hear during that time
🦉Reporting: You submit your checklist through the free Aussie Bird Count app or website. You can do just one count, or multiple counts throughout the week
Why it Matters 🦆
🐦 Population Tracking: It acts as a massive “census” for Australian wildlife, helping scientists see which species are thriving and which are declining
🪶 Environmental Health: Because birds are highly sensitive to environmental changes, tracking them helps researchers understand the overall health of local ecosystems
🦢 Urban Trends: It provides crucial data on how native birds are adapting to urban sprawl and changing green spaces in our cities and towns
We have so many beautiful birds down at the Ecolodge, they love to eat the fruit growing on our trees and make nests among them. We have a willywag tail we’ve affectionately named Roger and Black Cockatoos that let us know when the rain is coming. We encourage you to take part in the bird count, and if you’ve been with us before and snapped some bird pics, we’d love to see!
