Lambing 2026 🐑❤️
This has been our earliest lambing season yet. It started in early July with a couple of sets of twins, with the bulk of our lambs arriving from around 15 July through to the end of August.
There have been a few special little arrivals this year, including our first ever properly black lamb born on the farm — a purebred Shropshire. 🖤🐑
We also ended up with one poddy lamb, an English Leicester × Shropshire, who dear Richie has taken on the job of raising. Forget Mary had a little lamb — around here it’s Richie had a little lamb! 😂 It follows him absolutely everywhere.
Dora has played her part too, washing and cleaning the lamb as well as providing it with plenty of companionship. ❤️
One of the real highlights of this year’s lambing was being honoured and privileged to have three very talented young people spend time with us, helping to grade our Shropshire flock and select the ram lambs we will retain.
All three are junior judges and have an excellent eye for sheep. It was wonderful listening to their observations and seeing the thought they put into assessing the lambs. The future of our sheep breeds is in very capable young hands. 🐑❤️
It hasn’t been an easy season, though. It continues to be very dry here and we’re still buying in all of our feed. Looking across the paddocks, we’re certainly hoping spring brings us some much-needed rain. 🌧️
Despite the dry conditions and the seemingly never-ending feed bills, lambing is still one of my favourite times of the year. There’s always something new, something unexpected and, thankfully, plenty to smile about. 🐑❤️
