The million-dollar barra has been caught, but there’s still $960,000 swimming around the Territory 🎣

Australia’s richest fishing competition is in its 12th season, and while the $1 million fish has found its lucky angler, 96 red-tagged barra worth $10,000 each are still out there until 31 March 2027. Yellow Water Billabong has produced more than its share of $10,000 barra over the years, including back-to-back catches by local fishos.

🪶 Meet the Royal Spoonbill, one of Australia’s most distinctive waterbirds. With its brilliant white plumage, long black legs and unmistakable spoon-shaped bill, this feathered beauty certainly knows how to make an entrance.

And take a closer look at those head feathers! 👀 During breeding season, Royal Spoonbills develop long, wispy white plumes at the back of their heads, giving them a rather fabulous, spiky-haired look.

You’ll often spot them wading through shallow wetlands, sweeping that unique bill from side to side to catch small fish, crustaceans and other aquatic treats.

💙 Meet the Azure Kingfisher

Blink and you might miss it… but spot an Azure Kingfisher perched quietly above the wetlands of Kakadu and you’re unlikely to forget it.
With its brilliant blue plumage, fiery orange breast and striking red legs, this tiny kingfisher is one of the jewels of Kakadu’s waterways. Kakadu is home to more than 280 species of birds, making it an extraordinary place for birdwatchers and anyone who simply enjoys keeping an eye out for wildlife.

And tiny really is the word. An Azure Kingfisher is typically around 16 cm long and weighs only about 30–40 grams - roughly the weight of a couple of tablespoons of water.

Your best chance of spotting one? Keep your eyes on the waterline during a Yellow Water Cruise, where your guide will point out the birdlife along the billabong.

A flash of blue. A splash of orange. And then… gone. 💙🧡
