Organic Wines

Angove Family Winemakers

Just over a kilometre from Bellevue B&B sits one of McLaren Vale’s leaders in organic w**emaking.

Angove Family Winemakers has spent years refining organic and biodynamic vineyard practices. Their philosophy is simple: healthy soil leads to expressive w**es.

Their Warboys Vineyard contains some of the region’s oldest Shiraz and Grenache vines.

Visitors often notice something unusual in the rows — a team of Indian Runner ducks wandering the vineyard. They naturally manage pests and weeds while adding a bit of personality to the landscape.

The cellar door sits only about 1.4 km away, making it an easy stop during a stay in McLaren Vale.

Coast Park Trail

The Coast Park Trail runs along the edge of Gulf St Vincent and links together beaches, cliffs, and seaside suburbs.

Sections are perfect for walking while others are popular with cyclists. Coffee stops along the Esplanade make it easy to break the journey.

Look down toward rock pools and sandy coves along the way.

Wildlife note:
Near Aldinga Beach the threatened Hooded Plover nests on the sand. Stay on the paths so these small birds can breed safely.

Distance example:
About 15 km return for a relaxed outing.

Heysen Trail – Waitpinga to Kings Beach

This stretch of the Heysen Trail is for walkers who like dramatic coastal scenery.

The track runs through Newland Head Conservation Park, climbing through coastal scrub before reaching exposed cliff-top sections overlooking the Southern Ocean.
Expect steep descents, rocky gullies, and uneven limestone underfoot.

The reward is the view — long empty coastline and powerful surf below.

Wildlife tip:
Keep an eye out for dolphins, seals, and occasionally sea-eagles along the cliffs.

Distance: about 12 km
Grade: moderate to challenging

File this away for a slow weekend explore.

Granite Island Walk

Granite Island is one of the easiest coastal walks on the Fleurieu — and one of the most rewarding.

The island circuit passes giant granite boulders shaped by wind and sea over thousands of years. Look for Umbrella Rock and other natural formations as the track loops around the shoreline.

Interpretive signs explain the geology, wildlife, and maritime history of the area.
The path is accessible and mobility-friendly, with a ramped gravel route available.
Best time to visit:

Between June and October you may spot Southern Right Whales offshore.
Walking tip:

Try the circuit anti-clockwise for a smoother route with fewer stairs.

Save this spot for a future Fleurieu wander.

Deep Creek Conservation Park

Deep Creek feels like the Fleurieu Peninsula before settlement.

The park protects one of the largest remaining areas of native vegetation in the region. Walking tracks range from gentle loops to challenging coastal circuits.

Many trails climb above the coastline where views stretch across Backstairs Passage toward Kangaroo Island.

Wildlife sightings are common — especially birdlife. More than 100 species live here.

Seasonal tip:
Late winter and early spring bring spectacular wildflowers.

Goolwa Heritage Walk

If you enjoy historic towns, this short walk is an easy way to understand why Goolwa mattered.

Once Australia’s first inland river port, the town grew quickly during the paddle-steamer era. The self-guided heritage walk threads through the wharf precinct and surrounding streets.

Along the way you’ll pass Customs House, the old courthouse, the telegraph office and buildings dating back to the 1840s.

The district known as “Little Scotland” shows how early settlers shaped the town’s character — something still visible in the architecture today.

Make a day of it:
Combine the Wharf walk, Cadell Street shops walk and Little Scotland route for a longer loop.

Morning is a pleasant time to visit before stopping for coffee nearby.

Coast to Vines Rail Trail

This is one of those trails where the scenery changes constantly.

The Coast to Vines Rail Trail runs from Marino through to Willunga, following a former rail corridor that now links coast, suburbs, and vineyards.

Early sections hug the cliffs with views across the water. Further south the trail moves inland through farmland and vineyards, finishing near the township of Willunga.

Many visitors also connect onto the nearby Shiraz Trail — a 9 km path winding past cellar doors and old railway stops through McLaren Vale w**e country.

Good to know:
The trail is open year-round but sections are exposed. Bring water and be ready for changing weather.

Save this spot for a future Fleurieu wander.

Second Valley Heritage Walk

Second Valley rewards slow wandering.

This short heritage walk links together the small stories that shaped the town — mills, workshops, and the old fishing wharf. The path winds past the remains of early sawmills, the blacksmith site, and the causeway leading toward the jetty.

Eventually you reach “the island,” where the original 1855 wharf and fishing sheds once stood. Today it’s a peaceful lookout over the coastline.

Interpretive signs along the route help piece together what life looked like when the settlement was busy with timber, trade, and coastal shipping.
Distance: 5 km return

Allow: around 2 hours

Tip:
Wear sturdy shoes. Some sections are rocky, and if you explore the shoreline it’s worth checking tide times first.

Diana Olive Oil

For those who enjoy cooking with quality extra virgin olive oil, take a look at Diana Olive Oil.

Their grove grows several olive varieties including Frantoio, Koroneiki, Kalamata, Leccino and Verdale.

Early harvest olives produce their fresh Novello oil, while fruit picked later in the season becomes their rich Red Label oil.

The producers still use a traditional basket press, a slower method known for producing highly aromatic oils.

Their oils have received both state and national awards.
