From Swamp to Secrets Amazing Garden and Lawns.

In 1985, when George and Aldy lost their farm, every last blade of grass in Baroon Pocket was excavated to create the new water supply dam we now know as magnificent Lake Baroon.

After their property was resumed, they purchased 80 acres from the neighbour, Steve Weis, just up the hill, and called it Obiland.

Looking at the plans for the future lake shoreline, George realised that part of their new property would become an island – and a swamp!

Towards the end of construction, a huge scraper was brought in to shape the lake edges. George much preferred the idea of lawns to swamp, so he arranged for rocks to be dropped along the low-lying land and had the scraper driver backfill the area, creating what would become our canoe beach and lakeside gardens. The driver was rewarded with a plate of Aldy’s famous Mars Bar Muffins a 2 slabs of beer!

Imagine it then: Red-brown dirt, a few straggling trees, no gardens, no roads and no treehouses.

This was their beginning.

In 1993, George built The Lakehouse, almost entirely from recycled materials salvaged from old railway buildings. Today, this beautiful little building sits just metres from Lake Baroon and is at the heart of many of our weddings and celebrations.

Over the years, the gardens have been lovingly transformed by George, our grounds team and, more recently, our head landscaper Phil Lewis and his team, Luke and Daniel. Our son Rob has also beautifully restored the original jetty.

From that first red dirt swamp to the lush lakeside paradise you see today has been quite a journey.

What you see now has been created through decades of hard work, love, imagination and a belief in the dream.

George and Aldy have left a little of part of themselves in this very special place – and we hope every guest who visits feels a little of that magic too.

Today we celebrate two very special people here at Secrets on the Lake — George and Aldy, who are celebrating an incredible 58 years of marriage! 🥂💕

Fifty-eight years of choosing each other, building a life together, sharing adventures, raising a family, creating memories and weathering all that life brings.

Their love story is woven into so much of what makes Secrets so special. From the beautiful place they have created, to the warmth and love that surrounds it, you can feel their story in every corner.

58 years is something truly worth celebrating. ❤️
