The mountain's the headline, but it's not the whole story. Some of the best school holiday days start with simply heading down the hill.
Twenty minutes and you're in Merrijig. Another fifteen and you're in Mansfield — coffee in hand, maybe a browse through the shops you always mean to get to. From there, the valley's full of its own small adventures.
At Mansfield Zoo, 1.30pm means lion feeding and a keeper-guided tour — the kind of close-up animal encounter that doesn't happen at home, with deer and kangaroos happy to be hand-fed along the way. Or head out to High Country Estate, where the gardens, gallery and maze are open 10am–4pm daily through the holidays — complete with a gnome hunt the kids will take far more seriously than you expect, and a heart-shaped centre that's worth the wander to find.
None of it needs to be planned to the hour. Pick one, pick both, stop for donuts on the way back.
The High Country rewards the unhurried.
And the nice part about basecamp is there's always somewhere to come back to. The drive back up the mountain is also the drive home — to a warm room, a hot shower, and someone else cooking dinner.
You don't have to choose between the mountain and the valley. With Breathtaker, you get both.
