Banubanu Beach Retreat & Lodge Banubanu was created 12 years ago by husband and wife team, Trevor Hosie and Helen Martin, with nothing more than a dream.

Banubanu is a dual‑property experience across Bremer Island and Nhulunbuy, uniting an island eco‑retreat and a town lodge to deliver oceanfront stays, cultural connection, comfort and adventure in East Arnhem Land Banubanu Beach Retreat, a private island tourism venture that has been operating since 2005, it started out as a fishing camp which eventually evolved into an eco-beach retreat that offers an escape from the hustle of modern life. It is a boutique getaway destination on Bremer Island, 13 kilometres off the coast of Nhulunbuy in East Arnhem which Helen and Trevor have been given permission to operate through strong relationships with the traditional owners. Located on Bremer Island 13 kilometres off the coast of Nhulunbuy in East Arnhem Land it is known for its natural surroundings and connection to local Yolngu culture. Guests are ensured a memorable stay by offering a range of high quality, unique experiences and activities from fishing charters; cultural tours; walking trails or just lying in a hammock reading a book.

Three generations. One kitchen. Plenty of pasta. 🍝

Fulvio, his mum Nella and daughter Monisha cooking up one last family dinner before they head home.

A pretty special way to end a few weeks together on Dhämbaliya. ❤️

Cultural advice: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers are advised that this post refers to people who have passed away.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Mr T & C Yumbulul.

Mr T Yumbulul was a respected Yolŋu elder and Traditional Owner of the English Company and Wessel islands in North East Arnhem Land, including the Bromby islands and the land on which Banubanu Beach Retreat stands. We are deeply grateful for the privilege of welcoming guests to his Country, and for the generosity, knowledge and care he and his wife shared with us. They particularly provided invaluable support and guidance to Fulvio and Eileen since their move to the region and they will be missed by us all.

Our heartfelt condolences go to their family, their community and all who loved them. We will continue to honour their memory and their connection to this land and sea.

With deep respect,
The Banubanu Beach Retreat team

What a difference a day can make…Chris and the boys have been on the tools since sunrise. This morning, the main building here at Banubanu was a construction site! Tonight, it’s a beautiful resort again, ready to welcome 50 women arriving by boat tomorrow for a breast cancer fundraiser 🫶🏼

Everyone has worked incredibly hard to pull it all together, and tomorrow we’ll be helping wherever we’re needed to make sure it’s a fantastic event and hopefully raise plenty of money for a really good cause ☺️

But for tonight, the tools are down and we’re all about to sit around the table together for another amazing meal prepared by Joffre, the resident French chef here at Banu Banu. Every meal includes something different, with buffalo, octopus, mussel panna cotta and pulled kangaroo tail among the things we’ve tried so far… food we probably wouldn’t normally order, but have absolutely loved 😍

A big day, a beautiful sunset, good people and dinner together. We might even go turtle spotting like we did last night 🐢 Tomorrow… it’s about to get rowdy! 🥂😆

On behalf of Eileen & Fulvio, we extend our deepest condolences to the Rirratjingu clan, the Marika family, and the whole Yirrkala and North-East Arnhem Land community on the passing of a truly great leader.

He gave a lifetime of service to his people — as a founder and long-serving chairman of the Rirratjingu Aboriginal Corporation, and as a steadfast advocate for land rights and Yolŋu culture. His leadership carried forward the legacy of those who came before him, and it will guide those who come after.

Our thoughts are with his family and community during this time of grief. Bäyŋu ŋuli. Vale
