The roses have arrived. The hole is dug. Now what? 👀

Kelly walks us through getting a bare-root rose into the ground properly — and one of the big things to watch is those roots.

🌹 Nice, loose soil at the bottom
🌹 Position the roots so they’re pointing down, not sideways or curling around
🌹 If a root is ridiculously long, it can be trimmed so it sits properly
🌹 Backfill and add some water partway through to help the soil settle around the roots
🌹 Finish filling… then water, water, water, water! 💦

You’re setting those roots up to head down into the soil looking for moisture, rather than hanging around near the surface.

And apparently just shoving it in a hole and hoping for the best isn’t the official technique. Who knew. 😂

🌹 Want to grow your own?
Go give Wagner’s Rose Nursery a follow, check out their range online and have a wander through the website — there are still some beauties to discover.

And if this series has you suddenly planning a rose patch… good timing! Selected varieties are currently 20% off for the last few weeks of their sale. 👀🌹

🌱 Want to learn how we REALLY propagate our dahlias?

This isn’t just a quick “here’s where to make the cut” tutorial.

Our Online Dahlia Cuttings Workshop takes you through the whole process we use here at The Olde Creamery — the stuff we’ve learnt through actually propagating hundreds and hundreds of dahlias.

We cover:

🌱 How and when to take your cuttings
✂️ Preparing and taking the perfect cutting
🪴 Our potting mix and propagation setup
🛒 Where we actually buy our supplies
🌿 Rooting, feeding, potting on and aftercare
🐛 The pests that love dahlias almost as much as we do — and how we manage them
🤦 What goes wrong (because it does!) and how to troubleshoot it
🌸 How to turn your favourite dahlia into a whole bench of new plants

You get over an hour of practical video instruction PLUS our comprehensive written guide, so you can watch the process and have something beside you to refer back to when you’re actually doing it.

The aim isn’t just to get a cutting to root.

It’s to give you the confidence and knowledge to propagate dahlias properly yourself, season after season.

And when you think about what we happily spend on a single dahlia tuber… learning how to turn that one plant into many suddenly makes a lot of sense. 😉

Learn the process we use on the farm and start multiplying your own collection. 🌱✂️

We all want that gorgeous wall of blooms… but what’s happening underneath the soil matters just as much as what we see above it.

Kelly learnt this one through trial and error: roses like their own space.

Plant them too close together and their roots start competing for the same water and nutrients — and sometimes the stronger roses simply win.

The result? Two roses thriving while their poor neighbours are basically living off scraps. 😂

The same thinking applies when planting near established trees and other plants with hungry root systems.

🌹 Give them room.
💦 Give them access to water.
🌱 Give those roots somewhere to go.

As Kelly puts it, roses are basically: “This is my space. This is my water. This is my fertiliser. Go away everyone else.” 😂

🌸 DAHLIA TUBER SALE — WEDNESDAY 7PM! 🌸

Our Spring Dahlia Tuber Sale opens Wednesday 9 September at 7PM Victorian time (AEST)

Before the madness begins, here’s what you need to know 👇

🌿Not every cultivar on the farm will be available in this sale.
Some varieties are being held for release as Garden Ready Plants, while others are simply taking their sweet time waking up! We will only release tubers once we are happy that we can confirm their viability.

🌸 Some of our rarer “unicorn” varieties are limited to ONE per customer.
Please play fair and give another grower a chance. Additional quantities may be cancelled and repeated attempts may incur a restocking fee.

📦 Multiple orders?
If you come back for another order, select Farm Gate Collection on your subsequent order and then email us your order numbers so we can combine shipping where possible. Additional postage may apply if the combined parcel exceeds weight limits.

🚚 Please be patient with dispatch.
We’re a tiny farm and every tuber is checked and packed by us. For our main tuber sale, we aim to have orders completed and on their way by the end of October, ready for planting.

🌱 Dahlia tubers come in all shapes and sizes.
Big, little, long, short and occasionally downright weird! Every tuber we send will be checked at packing and confirmed to have a viable eye or shoot.

Once your order arrives, its success depends on growing conditions, weather, soil, watering, pests and care — so please read the growing guide we send with your order.

Most importantly…

🌏 TAS & WA growers — yes, you can shop the sale! We’re approved to send eligible Dahlia tubers interstate under our biosecurity accreditation. Additional quarantine/compliance charges apply, and will be applied at checkout.

Thank you for your support.

Want those long-stemmed, Valentine’s Day-style roses in your cutting garden? It starts with choosing the right type of rose.

In our first G&T Club Garden Session, Kelly from Wagners Rose Nursery Wagner's Rose Nursery explains why Hybrid Tea roses are a great choice for cutting — generally giving you those longer stems with a beautiful feature bloom at the end.

Floribundas? Gorgeous, but typically bushier with more flowers on shorter stems.

And then there’s disbudding ✂️ — removing the smaller side buds so the plant puts its energy into that one fabulous main bloom.

Apparently there’s a little more to growing cut-flower roses than Jamie’s usual buy it first, work it out later approach. 😂🌹

We love hearing what you think ❤️

Our little condiment range has grown from the same philosophy we use across the farm: make something properly, make it with care, and make it good enough that we’re genuinely proud to put our name on it.

From chutneys and relishes to jams, sauces and our ever-popular apple butter, everything is made in small batches with a whole lot of attention to flavour, presentation and quality.

And yes… sometimes people discover us because they went down a very specific recipe rabbit hole and suddenly needed apple butter. 😂 We’re absolutely here for that.

Whether you’re buying a jar for your own pantry, building a little gift box, or sending something to someone who deserves a treat, we want opening one of our parcels to feel a bit special.

Because small business should feel personal.

So if you’ve never tried our condiment range before, consider this your little nudge. 👀

Have a browse through the range, grab a few favourites, try something new, or put together a box for someone else.

And if you’ve ordered from us before — thank you. Every order, review, recommendation and “you need to try this” message genuinely helps our little farm business keep growing.

🌿 Small batch
🌿 Made with care
🌿 Packed beautifully
🌿 Shipped Australia-wide where eligible

Go on… your pantry probably needs a little Olde Creamery upgrade. 😜

The fun side of farming… websites. 😂

Updating every cultivar that somehow isn’t on the website yet.

Cross-checking databases.
Finding the right photos.
Checking spelling.
Checking stock.
Trying to remember who I sent that photo to…

And then the classic:

“Why didn’t I just put it in the bloody folder like we said we would?” 🤦‍♂️

Nothing says glamorous flower farming quite like hours of admin behind a laptop.

Spring sale prep is well and truly underway… 🌸💻
