Footpath designs for fun and learning were installed last week in the final stage of the โ€˜Steps to Growโ€™ initiative, at the Westside Foreshore near the amenities block and leading out to the abutment of the old Great Western Bridge.

These designs, developed through consultation with the local Barngarla community, feature depictions of common marine life from the Upper Spencer Gulf, with animal names written in both English and Barngarla.

This mini footpath trail is designed to encourage curiosity and play for pedestrians of all ages, and features elements of literacy and numeracy to support early learning, as well as showcasing the cultural and ecological significance of our regionโ€™s sea life.

The Steps to Grow project was funded by Communities for Children Port Augusta with thermoplastic designs installed by Groundsplash Playground Markings.

PORT AUGUSTA WHARF UPGRADE UPDATE

Test piling will soon be undertaken from a barge located alongside the wharf to further support design planning.

Test Piling: Late June until late July 2026
Hours of work

Monday to Friday 7am to 7pm

Test piling involves driving piles into the seabed to assess the underwater soil condition. While geotechnical investigations were completed in September, additional time has been required to critically review and refine the design in response to existing site conditions, ensuring the most appropriate approach before progressing to this next phase.

A small section of the south western end of the Wharflands Esplanade carpark will be temporary closed, and marine exclusion zone will be in place while these investigations are carried out.

You may have noticed that we have been inspecting the deck planks and supporting structures in preparation for test piling works, which are expected to commence in the coming weeks.

Results from test piling and investigations will help guide the next stage of the design process.
