Some gardens are planted from scratch. Cloudehill was inherited.

The site at Olinda has been worked since 1895 and ran as a flower farm from around 1918, so when Jeremy Francis began his garden there in 1992 he built it around what was already standing: hedges of rhododendron, plantations of deciduous azalea, rows of beech, and bulb meadows grown from stock brought out from Holland in the thirties.

Five acres, open seven days from 10am to 5pm, $15 for adults and free for children under sixteen. Seasons Restaurant looks out over all of it from the terrace, and the Diggers Garden Shop is there for anyone who leaves wanting to plant something of their own.

There's more to the Yarra Valley than cellar doors 🍸

in Healesville is an easy drive from Sage Ringwood and it's a whole afternoon in itself. Paddles of G&Ts out in Jude's Gin Garden, a small menu at the Tuck Shop to go alongside, and on weekends a 55-minute tasting up in the private mezzanine, five gins and a signature G&T to start. Bookings are essential either way.

Go on a Friday and they pour half-price gin drinks from 6pm to 8pm.
