As a host, what are you doing to make your guests’ experience truly valuable?

Remember, it’s not just about the accommodation you provide, but the entire experience you help create.

Some guests have only a couple of days and want to make every moment count. Others want to slow down, while some want to explore everything your destination has to offer.

Have you made it easy for them?

Think local recommendations, hidden gems, places to eat, things to see and do, and even ideas for those days when the weather isn’t quite postcard-perfect.

As hosts, we have local knowledge our guests often don’t. Sharing it thoughtfully can make all the difference between a good stay and a great stay.

Because a memorable stay isn’t just about what’s inside the home, but the experiences waiting beyond the front door.

One of the greatest gifts of travelling for eight weeks was having time to slow down.

To wander, take a different path, stop for a conversation or simply watch the world go by.

And when you’re not in a hurry, you notice more.

Feathers appearing in unexpected places. A sea of sunflowers drawing us in. A retired fisherman turned artist sharing his stories, poetry and paintings. Familiar faces reappearing thousands of kilometres from home.

None of these moments were planned, but they may never have happened if we’d been rushing.

A feather is just a feather to someone else. Sunflowers are simply a beautiful view.

But to you, they might hold a memory, a connection or a quiet reminder that, even when someone is no longer beside you, you may not be travelling entirely alone.

Sometimes what you find has very little to do with where you are, and everything to do with what it means to you. ❤️

BARLEY BY THE BAY || Where the country meets the coastline.

So much of what goes into creating a beautiful space happens long before the finished result.

Over the past few months, we’ve been carefully considering every detail, drawing inspiration from the natural beauty of our surroundings.

The warmth and earthy tones of the country, the softness of the coastline, natural timbers, stone and layers of texture that bring the two together.

Our vision has always been to create something that feels connected to its surroundings. Relaxed, welcoming and timeless, with a sense of understated luxury.

More than just a beautiful place to stay, we want Barley by the Bay to be somewhere guests can slow down, feel at home and truly enjoy where they are.

Here’s a little glimpse into the thought process behind it all.

When preparing a space for guests, it’s easy to think about the bed, the bathroom, the towels and all the beautiful finishing touches.

But what about luggage?

It might seem like a small detail, yet having somewhere practical to unpack can make a huge difference to how comfortable a guest feels.

To unpack or not to unpack often depends on how many nights someone is staying.

For a short stay, guests may prefer to leave everything in their suitcase. But even then, having a sturdy luggage rack or a clear space at a comfortable height means they don’t have to bend down, rummage through their bag or leave it open on the floor.

For a longer stay, unpacking becomes much more appealing. Guests want to settle in, organise their belongings and feel as though they can properly relax rather than living out of a suitcase.

A wardrobe with enough room, a few empty drawers and somewhere to place luggage can make all the difference.

These are the little things hosts can easily take for granted because they’re not always part of the obvious checklist. But for guests, they can shape the entire experience.

No one wants to unpack on the floor.

No one wants to bend over repeatedly to reach the bottom of a suitcase.

And no one wants to move their luggage around the room every time they need something. European steps aren’t forgiving.

A simple luggage rack, bench or designated space at a comfortable height is a small investment that offers a big improvement in comfort and accessibility.

Because thoughtful hosting isn’t only about how a room looks when guests arrive.

It’s also about how easily they can live in it during their stay.

One of the greatest joys of travelling is discovering all the things you never knew you needed to experience!

The cats that appear in the most peculiar places.

The accidental local tour guide who just happens to know all the best photography tips.

The sporting events you didn’t even know were happening, sometimes with Aussies competing!

Finding yourself passionately cheering for Red Star Belgrade, a football team you never knew you needed to support.

The challenge of navigating a washing machine in a foreign language.

Holding your breath as you squeeze through impossibly narrow streets, wondering whether you’ll make it out the other side!

Discovering that airports have pet restrooms. Who knew?

And finding the best yiros of your entire European holiday… nowhere near Greece!

It’s the unexpected, the funny, the slightly chaotic and the wonderfully ordinary moments that often become the best stories.

Sometimes the most memorable parts of travelling are the ones that never made it onto the itinerary.

You arrive at your accommodation. First impressions matter. Of course they do.

The view, the location, the beautiful interiors, that feeling when you first open the door.

But after eight weeks travelling through Europe, staying in so many different places, I’ve been reflecting on what really makes accommodation memorable.

And often, it’s not what you expected.

It’s the hosts who genuinely care. The ones who share their local knowledge, go out of their way to organise a boat tour, offer thoughtful recommendations or make sure there’s another plate of krofna (Serbian doughnuts) to enjoy.

It’s the unexpected gestures, the generosity and the pinch me moment of someone cooking dinner for you by the water! It’s the feeling that someone has genuinely thought about your experience.

Beautiful spaces create an impression, but it’s the feeling you take away that stays with you.

The love and care put into a place is felt. And it’s noticed and instantly make you feel on holidays

8 weeks of Euro summer travel. 6 people. A lot of places, experiences and different types of accommodation.

Moving around so much gave us a real perspective on what helps you switch off, slow down and truly feel like you’re on holiday.

As an experienced host, I’ve always known that a great stay is about more than pretty pictures. But being the guest for 8 weeks gave me a whole new perspective on the little things that make you feel comfortable, relaxed and completely present.

So I thought I’d share some of the things we noticed along the way that made certain stays stand out. Not just for how they looked, but for how they made us feel.

Come along as we reflect on it

Sometimes you have to step away to appreciate what you’ve created. Our time travelling through Europe has been a timely reminder that the standard we deliver really is something special. It’s given us fresh perspective, reinforced our vision and even more excitement for Streaky Bay’s newest accommodation Barley By The Bay.

Introducing…Barley By The Bay

It carries the story of the family’s legacy from a life shaped by the coast, grounded in farming family values, and built on generations of hard work, resilience and love for the land.

It reflects the place we call home, and the traditions that have been passed down through our family with such pride.

But it also looks to the future.

This name is a nod to the next generation of granddaughters — Barley, (Billie and Harley) and the legacy we hope to leave for them. A legacy of family, connection, strength and a deep appreciation for the life and land that have shaped us.

Some homes simply provide a place to stay.

Others become part of the memories you take home.

From the very beginning, this project has been about creating an experience, one that feels effortlessly luxurious, beautifully relaxed and deeply connected to the Streaky Bay coastline.

Bathed in natural light and designed to embrace breathtaking sea views, every space has been carefully curated to invite you to slow down.

Morning coffee overlooking the ocean.

Long lunches that drift into sunset.

Beautifully designed interiors that feel warm, timeless and inviting.

Spaces made for celebrating life’s milestones, gathering with family and friends, or simply escaping the everyday.

Every material, texture and finish has been selected with purpose, creating a home that feels as beautiful as it is functional.
