🚙 Big Lap Preparations – But a Few Plans Might Need Changing! 🇦🇺

We recently weighed a Toyota LandCruiser and caravan combination for a client preparing to tackle the Big Lap around Australia!

The results highlighted a few important concerns:

⚠️ Rear axle weight was over its limit.

⚠️ Only 30kg of GVM capacity remained with the caravan hitched.

The original plan was to add a tinny to the roof of the LandCruiser, but unfortunately, the numbers showed that some changes would be needed before hitting the road.

This is exactly why getting your setup weighed before your big adventure is so important. It’s better to identify potential issues now than find out when you’re thousands of kilometres from home!

⚖️ TOW BALL MASS & REAR AXLE WEIGHTS

A perfect arvo down by the Woronora River helping some clients understanding their weights. This caravan was right on its Tow Ball Mass limit, highlighting why it’s important to understand how that weight affects your tow vehicle.

🚙 Did you know? Because the tow ball sits behind the rear axle, it acts as a lever, placing additional load on the rear axle while reducing weight on the front axle.

This can lead to:

• Exceeding rear axle weight limits
• Reduced steering and braking performance
• Increased strain on tyres and suspension

✅ Being within your Tow Ball Mass limit doesn’t automatically mean your rear axle is compliant!

Another great example of why getting your setup weighed is so important before hitting the road. 🚙⚖️

During today’s weigh, the vehicle came in slightly over its GVM when hitched. Rather than simply handing over the numbers, we spent some extra time looking at the setup and were able to move/remove some weight.

After making a few adjustments, we got the combination where it needed to be. ✅

Sometimes it only takes a small change in how your load is distributed to make a big difference.

We caught up with some clients who are preparing for an incredible trip into East Arnhem Land. Their car and caravan combination was weighed and came in compliant across all measured weight limits ✅

They can now head off knowing exactly where their weights sit and enjoy the trip with a little extra peace of mind.

Van size can be a little deceptive when it comes to weight. Today I helped some clients and honestly didn’t think we’d have any worries as they rolled in. However, with a TBM of 219kg this compact camper had a bit of weight to it. A fully packed vehicle meant the stock Land Cruiser suspension couldn’t take much more, with the hitched GVM being over by 76kg.
