Letter from the farm – September 2026
Part 1 of 3
Hey there,
How are you? Yes, that’s right – cancer does not discriminate and while I love every part of living in the country, access to health care can be the price we pay.
Thankfully our September has been a gift of beautiful weather, enough rainfall to keep the grass growing and a never ending landscape of yellow.
Balls of yellow wattle flowers everywhere and yellow canola paddocks slowly dropping their petals as the flowers finish.
I can’t forget the yellow cape w**d flowering like daisies, covering any bare ground like a carpet.
The reality is that time keeps moving and life goes on, regardless of the hiccups along the road.
I love writing to you and sharing what has been happening on the farm. I know that not everyone has a connection to the country and I’m glad that we have this.
I am trying hard to keep this letter about the farm but I feel really strongly about telling the story of cancer and have to add it at the end.
As farmers we are in the game of turning grass into protein and fibre, and this September our biggest challenge is making the most of all the grass!
We are regenerative farmers and a key concept is high density grazing for short periods of time. In other words, large numbers of animals in small paddocks.
This week the ewes were in the small paddock surrounding our house and transformed the knee length grass into a low green carpet in just a few days.
Not only did they utilise the available calories with minimal effort, but we have effectively removed a potential fire danger risk from our home and sheds. Win, win!
