Aurelia's Farm

Aurelia's Farm Situated on the edge of Uralla, a 2 bedroom cottage loaded with local personality.

Our mission is to provide a cosy and spacious place to stay, somewhere that families can catch up or travellers passing through can just relax - while enjoying some great local food of course. We source almost all of our produce from local markets and farmers, so guests are always treated to a generous breakfast basket and some in house baking, including our own banana bread and rich toasted muesli.

Hard to believe we welcomed our first guests in 2012.

A huge day for our family, mostly because our gorgeous girl demonstrated a flair for the dramatic and - after giving her mother one hell of a fright the week before - she decided she would arrive 4 weeks early on the same day we welcomed our first guests.

Andrew left the hospital in time to get the fresh bread and make sure they settled in, before heading back to us. I've never met those wonderful first guests, but I have always been grateful they found us and booked a stay at a pretty much unknown B&B in a small country town.

With the exception of COVID of course, and a slower restart after we were finally able to get up and running again, we have been welcoming guests ever since. 14 years and counting.

The Cottage has become a welcome space for families, with our room to roam proving handy for little legs to burn off some energy, and the reliable internet has been great for business travellers looking for a quiet, self contained space too. Above all, we love welcoming people in to a space that has been such an important part of our lives, as our first home and Jacob's first home too. Built very much with guests in mind, we hope it will always be a place people feel welcome, rested and restored.

Our first coffee table was a keeper. We’ve still got it, we just use it for ironing these days. Well, occasionally …

We’ve had lots of great conversations about the Cottage lately, so I thought we’d share a little of how it all came together. Built by my beautiful Dad, with Andrews’s very capable help, and to plans drawn by me. I can’t recall the program I used now but it was all on a little USB key, on a long since lost laptop.

We house sat during most of the build, at various homes while we both still worked in Armidale. As wonderful as that was though, there’s no place like home so we were pretty keen to move in as soon as we could, hence the ironing board and slightly dodgy couch / doona set up. This was all pre curtains, blinds and heating so it was pretty cold!

We’d worked every weekend and night, managed a burst pipe and a whole lot more - and it was so worth it.

Andrew cut all of the pressed tin you see in the kitchen and bathroom, including cutting out all the power points, before it was powder coated and returned to us ready to install. A labour of love that has stood the test of time, adding so much character to the Cottage for our guests too.

My clearest memory of ‘dining at the ironing board’ though, is seeing the face of a wild cat / bear / lion (it was huge, we’ve never seen anything like it before or since) at the French doors on to the verandah, right opposite where we were sitting. We all paused for a moment, before it disappeared in to the night, most likely through the neighbour’s farm and on to the travelling stock route adjacent to our place.

So, on that note 😳, if you’re ready to book your next visit, we’d love to welcome you to our now very cosy Cottage 🔥. Lions not included 😉.

We are also on Airbnb and we always welcome bookings through this platform … but booking direct will always be cheaper … and leaves you with something left for dinner at the pub .

We love welcoming you to the Cottage, so we try to make this as easy as possible.

The most common way people book is by emailing [email protected] or calling 0434 408 163 (Tara). We confirm the booking with you (always by email) and then provide you with 3 payment options - funds transfer, EFTPOS or cash.

The other way to book is via Airbnb. This is the only online booking platform you’ll find us on and we don’t offer instant booking because we take more of our bookings directly (as above) and we need to double check our calendar. We understand people choose to book via Airbnb for lots of reasons and we are very happy to offer that option.

I do want to explain how a typical Airbnb booking fee structure works though, because I’ve become aware that this is really not well understood.

A recent booking for the Cottage for a 3 night stay for 2 people worked out like this -

The fee we charged - $495
The booking fee Airbnb charged us - $16.33
The booking fee Airbnb charged our guests - $76.87
Our guest ultimately paid $571.87
We received $478.67

For comparison, someone making the same booking with us directly would have paid $480. If they’d paid by EFTPOS we would hard absorbed the transaction fee.

Again I want to stress that we are very supportive of bookings either direct or through Airbnb - we love welcoming you to the Cottage. I just want everyone to understand that it will cost you more, and that this money goes to Airbnb, not to the accommodation provider.

Let’s just imagine for a moment though, what you would do with the extra $$ if it was in your pocket when you arrived. Lunch at a cafe, a take away dinner in the Cottage, a night out at our friendly pubs, or maybe some quality retail therapy. Food for thought.

While booking direct is always going to give you the best price, it also provides the best value for communities too.

We’ve made some updates to our website and in particular we’ve finally finished updating our Good Guide.

We first published this not long after opening the B&B in 2012 and we would update it every couple of years. Then Covid hit and we kind of let this slip. We’re glad to have it updated and published at long last again.

It’s entirely free to flick through, available on the front page of our website and on this link -
https://79750743.flowpaper.com/TheGuide2025/

We’ll have a printed copy on hand for guests to the B&B to browse through during their stay too.

Beautiful nights, even better days at the moment. Feels like we’ve earnt it after a pretty cold winter and we’re certainly making the most of it!

One of our favourite things to do is walk in to town (it’s about 2km from the B&B to the Main Street) and enjoy a meal. Last night we were at the , enjoying their delicious food, local beer and wonderful tables out the front. Their hospitality and warm welcome was the perfect way to start the school holidays.

Clear skies full of stars for the walk home was the icing on the cake ✨.

We’ve got availability from 15th - 20th October, then we’re fully booked until early December. Get in touch if you’re ready to take some time out.

We are so grateful for the wonderful people we meet through our B&B. Oscar and his family were part of our snow story weekend - and what a weekend it was!

Oscar left this review on our newly recovered google page, which is just about the kindest thing he could have done.

Thank you Oscar, and thank you to everyone who takes the time to leave a review for any small business. It really makes a huge difference!

A snow study in Uralla today ❄️.

We’re hoping everyone managed to find a bed, we took so many calls from stranded motorists, it was heart breaking not to have more to offer at our place. We’re very grateful to those who helped us connect people with a place to stay and those who helped make sure we could offer something to everyone who called. We see you and we appreciate you 👏.

Stay warm and dry wherever you are tonight.
