Before there were four luxury villas, there was a rundown farm, a very big dream… and a husband who said NO WAY! 😂
After so many of you discovered Edge over the weekend, I thought it was time to share a little more about the family and the story behind those villas on the water.
Hello! 👋 We're Clare and Cameron, and that's our daughter Emily and our beautiful Cookie in the first photo, taken on our opening weekend, Dec 2023.
But our story started long before Edge Luxury Villas was even an idea.
In 2012, we left city life behind, looking for a couple of acres in the South West. Somewhere for Cameron to have a big shed, our energetic Border Collie to run around, me to start my dream job, and for us to create a home.
Instead, we bought 137 acres of neglected farmland!
We were a teacher and a tradesman, with absolutely no experience running a farm, but we could see what this place could become.
And so began years of hard work. We renovated the old 1920s farmhouse, planted thousands of trees, improved the land and, slowly but surely, step by step, created the beautiful property we now call home.
One of our biggest dreams was to build a lake. Back then, it was just a cattle paddock that turned into a swamp for half the year. In 2015, the digging began, and in early 2016, Cameron built the beautiful bridge that has since become one of the most recognisable features of our property.
There were no plans for luxury accommodation. We simply wanted to make this place something special for ourselves.
But life has a funny way of changing your plans.
Cameron had been working away since 2008, and when Emily arrived in 2019, we wanted something different for our family. We wanted him home. We wanted more time together.
During my maternity leave, I started a little campground beside our lake. People arrived with their caravans and were blown away by the property we'd spent years creating.
And that's when an idea started forming…
What if we built accommodation right on the edge of the lake?
Cameron's first response? Absolutely NOT! 😂
Thankfully, I can be quite persuasive! 😊 The seed had been planted, and before long, Cameron was coming up with ideas of his own.
What followed was a huge leap into an industry neither of us knew anything about. But we knew one thing: if we were going to do this, we wanted to create something truly special. No shortcuts, no compromising on quality, and definitely not just another place to stay.
Swipe through the photos and you'll see some of that journey, including our little family standing on the very first foundations. We even pressed our handprints into the concrete, now hidden beneath the finished villas and water. A little piece of our family will always be part of Edge. ❤️
At the end of 2023, we opened our four overwater villas. By February 2024, Cameron was home full-time and I'd finished teaching.
We'd done it. We'd created a business from the place we loved, and more importantly, a way to be together as a family.
And now we get to share this beautiful little corner of the Margaret River region with people from all over Australia and beyond.
So when you stay at Edge, you're not staying at a big resort. You're staying on the property we've spent more than a decade pouring our hearts into, and we're still here, working on it, looking after it and welcoming our guests.
