St. Saviour’s Cathedral is called the oldest church in Bruges, with a history stretching back a very long time. However, the church was not granted cathedral status until 1834. This happened because the original bishop’s church (St. Donatian’s Cathedral) was demolished in the late 18th century during the French occupation!
