It is not a softbox! A softbox controls light directionally, one source, one direction, with a defined edge. A lantern wraps light in every direction simultaneously, producing a omnidirectional spread that mimics a practical light source. The result is a fill that feels motivated rather than placed.
Without the skirt, a lantern spills light in more than 180 degrees which is useful in certain environments, but might me problematic in others. The skirt cuts the top of the spread, giving you a cleaner separation between your subject and the floor and reducing unwanted bounce.
Our standard Aputure Lantern is compatible with the 300D, 300X, 600D, 600X and 600C. The larger Lantern 90 covers the same fixtures and extends compatibility to the 1200D and 1200X. The additional size increases the surface area of the source, which softens the light further and makes it viable as a primary source on larger setups rather than purely a fill tool.
Both modifiers are available in our inventory and can be added to any lighting package built around compatible Aputure fixtures.
