Today we pay our respects to Mrs. Russell’s House.

For almost 150 years, this beautiful old Bahamian home stood as a part of the history and character of Governor’s Harbour.
During the early hours of Friday morning, it was struck by lightning and tragically destroyed by fire.

It is incredibly difficult to see a house with so much history suddenly gone. Over the years, Mrs. Russell’s House was not simply a building — it was a place where people gathered, celebrated, made memories and experienced a little piece of Eleuthera.

We are deeply grateful to the Governor’s Harbour Volunteer Fire Department and everyone who responded this weekend. They worked bravely and tirelessly to bring the fire under control and protect the surrounding properties and community.

To the firefighters and volunteers who answered the call: thank you. We are incredibly grateful for everything you did.

Today, we remember the house as it was — and the 150 years of stories that lived within its walls. So many wonderful stories have been shared with us about the memories made in this house — from the gardenias Mrs. Russell used to grow and share, to her famous soup, and of course, all the visitors who have made such wonderful Eleuthera memories there.

These are the things we will remember.

Rest peacefully, Mrs. Russell’s House. You will be missed. ❤️

Do you know how the Glass Window Bridge got its name?

The Glass Window Bridge got its name from the natural limestone arch that once stood there, forming a narrow opening between the deep blue Atlantic Ocean on one side and the calm turquoise Caribbean side. This dramatic contrast of colors framed by the arch looked like a window cut into the island.

In 1885, Winslow Homer, the American artist, visited Eleuthera and painted the scene. He described it as looking like peering “through a window,” which is where the name came from. The original natural arch eventually collapsed due to storms and erosion, but the name “Glass Window” stuck, and today the man-made bridge spans the gap.

It’s one of the most photographed spots in The Bahamas because you can stand on the bridge and see two oceans — dark Atlantic on one side, clear aquamarine Caribbean on the other.

Love this cute painting that a guest did of our new Squires Village. This is the old Pyfrom House, a 150 year old house in central Governor's Harbour. It is now a coffee and gift shop and this is going up on our wall!
