The call of a Pied Kingfisher.
Vocal, bold, and unmistakable in black and white. The Pied Kingfisher holds a remarkable distinction as the largest species in the world capable of sustained hovering in still air. Motionless above the water, reading the current below, before dropping into a precise, arrow-straight dive. A transparent third eyelid seals across the eye on impact, a natural dive mask that allows it to track prey beneath the surface.
Most kingfishers must return to a perch to eat. The Pied Kingfisher does not—small prey taken mid-flight, swallowed on the wing, which allows it to hunt far out over open water, well beyond the reach of branch or reed.
Along the Chobe, where the river runs wide and the light catches the spray, this is a bird worth watching closely.
