Sarteneja’s Unique Fishing Heritage...
Ancient Maya communities in Belize used fish-trapping structures built with earth and other materials. Sarteneja’s traditional beach trap, reportedly established around the 1950s, uses wooden sticks and chicken wire. Perhaps local fishermen adapted an older fishing tradition, but this connection has yet to be proven. Today, Sarteneja remains one of the few known places in Belize practicing this distinctive method, making it a remarkable part of our cultural heritage!
