Migration is on at Black Rock Lodge!
Today brought passing Eastern Kingbirds, a young Keel-billed Toucan doing well, and some of our last glimpses of the Piratic Flycatcher before they move on.
The forest is changing with the seasons, and we’re already seeing a noticeable movement of birds through the lodge grounds. Migration is underway—and there’s always something new to discover on a birdwatching tour at Black Rock Lodge! 🌎

The Red-capped Manakin still seems to have reproduction on his mind!
But observations like this also make you wonder how much our changing climate is influencing the timing of nature’s most important events. Breeding seasons are closely tied to temperature, rainfall, food availability, and other environmental cues—and those patterns are changing.
Are we beginning to see birds adjust their breeding cycles to these changes? Perhaps. Every unusual observation is another piece of the puzzle, reminding us how closely wildlife is connected to the climate around us.
Nature is changing—and there is still so much for us to learn.

Survival in the Forest!
A female White-collared Manakin was busy nesting and caring for her young when danger arrived—a hungry Mexican Parrot Snake, always on the lookout for a meal of young birds.
The mother fought with everything she had to protect her nest. As the snake approached, she managed to push her young out of the nest just in time. The little one wasn’t quite ready to fledge, but in the forest, survival comes first.
The snake left hungry this time. The young manakin lived to see another day.
That’s raw nature. That’s survival. 🐍🌿📸📸📸📸 Isaias Morataya
