Many Tipi's Traditional Land-based Camps

Many Tipi's Traditional Land-based Camps There has been a deep sense of disconnection among our people, losing touch with who we are and how we live as Nehiyawak.

These camps were created to bring people back to the land—to reconnect with Wahkotowin, with each other, and with our way of life.

Created at the Reviving the Artisans Camp, this beautiful handmade parfleche purse was crafted by Jodi Arrowsmith—her very first time creating one! From shaping and lacing the rawhide to painting the vibrant floral design, her work shows the talent that emerges when our people are given the space to learn, create, and revive traditional artistry. A beautiful first piece and something to be proud of!

We have some luxury of Rvs for cooking and beside a power grid this year but the main part is always an encampment of Tipis! Every tipi was kept busy this year with multiple workshops occurring at once, and the space outside. At one point it was so quiet, just quiet murmur of people talking and all you could hear was the sounds of tools working away. Everyone was engrossed in thier projects and the spirits of creativity were dancing.

At the Reviving the Artisan Camp, old met new through our stained-glass class. While stained glass is not a traditional craft, participants used it to create beautiful feathers honouring the sacred eagle feather. The class was a wonderful success—culture, creativity, and new skills coming together.

I was struggling today with if I should continue with my camps knowing i at leaat did 4 yrs, when another issue arose, year after year, something! I so triggered by people with tempers. And promises snd disappontment. I was so hurt by it. While I was away fighting for the camp, I was told two eagles came and circled blessing the camp.
Then after I was back and crying, and trying to pull myself together, I said Creator will guide! CREATOR guiding me to the camp, Creator led the way this far.... then..
This Elderly couple was driving by and was drawn in by the flag on the road.
They had a short visit asking questions.
I said just wait I will run and get u some smoked fish. I gave them smoked fish, smoked salmon, and dry meat!
They were so thankful.
Then the woman after hearing about the camp said she was a fellow crafter, she presented me with sweetgrass, to***co, a print and a kokum scarf. She told me she was thankful to witness what we were doing and blessed by the camp, knowing kids prepared the fish and dry meat. She said to keep going and she was proud of me.
I was so thankful for that, I so needed that sign Creator! Blessings!

We were blessed with a visiting very young boy. He went right into the tipi and sat, crossed his legs and looked around.
The cultural teacher left to go get coffee and the little boy..."where mosom go?"
It was so cute, I barely heard him talk and suddenly he was very talkative in the tipi, telling us all about his recent monster truck journey.
His ease and comfortability and knowledge of importance of tipis and learning, show we are making the shifts to raise the next babies steeped in cultural knowledge.
Its not something learned in a classroom, its a way of life and must be lived.
